A Letter To Joseph
Friday, 04 May 2007
Joseph,
Boy your dad wasn’t lying when he said he had some awesome kids. You're very awesome. I thought your freestyle was pretty cool too but I'll talk to you more about that towards the end of this letter. Right now I want to talk to you about some important things on life. Listen my little brother, when men lift weights it strengthens them. Haters are like weights and the way you lift them is with love. Sometimes that means walking away or maybe saying something with love. But you truly have to have the love, you can't fake it. You have to ask God every morning, "Please give me the love I need to protect me." Yes my brother, love will protect you, it's the strongest weapon in the world. Men eat all the right foods and exorcise every day because they have love; they pass on the cheeseburgers and eat an old boring chicken salad because of love. Men say no to getting drunk, even when everybody else is doing it, they say no because of love. Me walk away from trouble, even though they want to cuss a hater out, they hold it in and walk away. They do this because of love. Men say no to drugs because they have love. Men come home and do their homework because they have love. Love is your greatest weapon and hate will destroy you. Don't even hate haters. It's not their fault. They were raised to be hateful since they were little bitty babies. That's why they do it. Don't worry; other haters will take care of other haters. It's not your job. Pride is also a killer. If somebody calls you a name, its pride that makes you stoop sown to their level and call them a name back. People used to tell me "Don't let no one disrespect you." Joseph, that’s the stupidest advice in the world. If someone disrespects you, never let them turn you into a dis-respecter like them. Never let a hater turn you into a hater.
The good news is there will be a lot less haters in college. Ya see buddy, everybody has to go to High School, or Jr. High, or Middle School. They have to go or else their parents get into trouble. That means that every good raised and bad raised person in the area is at high school. But once you make it to college, most of the unfortunate people don't make it. College is a much more positive place. So just hang in there. If that guy calls you a snitch again, or anything else; Just say, "Hey man, I'm sorry you feel that way about me. Personally, I think you're a pretty cool dude. By the way, nice shirt." He might say, "Yeah you better be nice if you know what's good for you." But if that's his response, just keep moving. That's the great thing about the free world; you can always find another place to go. In prison, it's sad because you can't just get up and get away from hateful people. And if those higher rank J.R.O.T.C. dudes want to make you do push ups, just do them. All they're doing id making you stronger. That’s what haters will never understand. We use them to build ourselves. You were saying that everywhere you turn somebody wants to harm you. That's because you're very special. When people stop wanting to harm you, is when you'll be one of them. So don't worry about it , just know that love is your protector. The gifted always get hated on.
Now back to your freestyle. I thought it was good but rapping doesn't mean you have to be a gangster. Be yourself; you said you find it difficult to write whenever you've never experienced anything exciting to write about. Well thank God that you've never experienced dangerous junk and for that I must congratulate your parents. They have raised some awesome kids. But you have gotten in trouble, and you have hung around, do just think about life. It doesn't have to be gangster. It could be getting detention at school, or maybe a chick, or losing someone close to you. Maybe a friend of yours lost somebody close to him/her. You can write about that. Try to write stories. No rappers are doing it because they lack the skills, not because it doesn't make money. Eminem broke all kinds of rap music records. He is the last rapper to have ever sold 10 million albums off of one project and all he does is rap about stories. He has a song about a house party he went to, he makes up a story about killing his wife, he raps about a girl that cheated on her husband, he raps about a fan named Stan. He says nothing about being a dope dealer or gangster because he never was. He raps about his life, his daughter, his wife, his mom, himself, etc. You can write as the narrator/story teller. Write about a dude that stole a car and crashed and killed himself. Rap about a guy with a knife chasing his girlfriend through the mall. Rap about anything you see. Life is interesting if you just step out of it and look. But you have to love this stuff. You have to love it so much that you walk around with a pad in your pocket and a pen on your ear.
Let me make up a quick verse and show you how you can just write any kind of story. Check it out
I had a homie named Slick that would beat his chick
Call her all kinds of bitches and hoes and dumb shit
One day she got sick of it and threatened to leave
He started choking her and it was getting hard to breath
But I knocked at the door I didn't know the deal
I didn't know that on the other side somebody was killed
But she was dead in the living room when Slick opened up
I walked in to the apartment and was like "What the fuck!"
He said, "Joe I had to kill da bitch I choked her to death,
because I couldn't bear the thought of her with somebody else.
I need help man. I don't want to go to jail!"
I said, "Fuck jail you should worry more about hell!"
He said "Help me get rid of the body my G.
I know a place we can bury her behind a tree."
I said, "Man that's a conspiracy and aiding a felon."
That's when he pulled his gun and pointed straight to my melon.......
HaHa!
Ya see bro, you can write about anything and everything. You can rap about getting busted stealing a pack of Bubble Yum. You can rap about an old lady that sells weed. You can rap about your teacher being on crack.
Well homito, thanks for your letter and I'm super proud of you for doing such a great job with your life. Keep up the great job.
Carlos
