John Cena's a busy man. On Sunday, he'll step into the ring to face the 7-foot-tall, 500-pound Big Show for the WWE U.S. Championship at Wrestlemania XX. But his biggest challenge may lie even further down the road, as Cena prepares to enter the rap game. The rising WWE star has proven that he can move arenas with his mic skills as easily as he does with his in-ring skills, and his debut album is expected to arrive later this year. Through the power of his weekly appearances on the WWE's Smackdown, the self-proclaimed "Doctor of Thuganomics" has already tried out his rhymes on millions of ears, but is he ready to go toe-to-toe with hip-hop's big dogs? Who better than Method Man to find out? The hip-hop icon (and wrestling fan) sat down with Cena recently to talk about their shared loves: wrestling and hip-hop.

Method Man: When did you fall in love with hip-hop?

John Cena: In 1985, my dad bought me a CD player for Christmas. This is when CDs first came out. I wanted the boom box with the TV in it. I got the CD instead. I didn't even know what CDs were. I was rocking tapes like everybody else. One of the first CDs he ever got me was the Fat Boys' Crushin': "The Fat Boys are back/ And you know they can never be wack!" Right after that, everything just kind of fell into place. I wore that CD out, then everything else hit after that. I must have been 10.

Method Man: Are all your rhymes you say when you come out the ring written, or off the head?

Cena: A lot of stuff is off the top of the head, but because they let me go off the top of the head so much, sometimes I say things that make Vince [McMahon] go, "It's a little too raw for TV." Now I burnt my bridges too much, so I gotta run everything by everybody to make sure, but once in a while I'll try to slip my stuff in.

Method Man: You are officially a rapper, 'cause they hit us with that every day, all day. "Can we have a chart of the lyrics so we can know everything you're going to say? No, that's not acceptable!" Last year at Wrestlemania, you issued an open challenge for a rapper to come battle you, and no one answered the call. How surprising is that?

Cena: That was something I could understand. I've been doing this rap thing not for a while, only two or three months. I'm a small-time white kid trying to represent hip-hop. If a hip-hop artist comes up and beats me in a battle, who did they beat? A small-town white kid who ain't never been an MC, who ain't never done nothing. Now if an MC comes to battle and they get beat by a small-town white boy, that's MC suicide. So there wasn't a positive aspect for the rapper, nothing positive that the rapper could gain out of it. There is no exposure they can possibly have, so I can understand why it didn't pan out. We had a little fun with that anyway. We had cardboard cutouts, just poking fun at people. It's all fun. We keep it on wax. There's no worries ... nothing's going wrong.

Method Man: And plus, a lot of y'all rap dudes can't fight anyway, so all you'd have to do is just sit on it and be easy.

Cena: Nah, we had some fun instead. Hopefully, at the end of the year, or the years to come, you'll see some hip-hop people like Meth up on WWE!

Method Man: If you had a choice of rappers, what MC would you choose as your tag-team partner — present company excluded?

Cena: Man, Bone Crusher's a big dude, and he ain't never scared! I ain't forgetting about him. He's a big dude.

Method Man: And he don't look like he stinks. That's the biggest thing to me. Most fat dudes look like they funky. He don't look like he stink. He look like a rather clean brother.

Cena: I could ride with him, too. I'd be like, "All right. We got to travel, but you ain't gonna stink up the car. You're a big dude, so you're gonna hold it down." Bone Crusher, if you need me and you want to slam some bodies down, I ain't never scared!

Method Man How daunting will it be to make people believe you're a legitimate MC?

Cena: Well, the thing is, I'm doing an album. I'm rapping every week. If you watch wrestling, you now know the hip-hop culture is being represented with wrestling. For the longest time, the cultures have almost been parallel. They're very similar, but there's never been that joint, there's never been that bridge. I don't care if they recognize John as an MC or as a rapper. I want people to look at WWE and know that hip-hop is accepted in that circle.

Method Man: Who are some of the people that you're working with on your album?

Cena: I'm looking forward to working with my boy Freddie Fox. Maybe we can get some members of the Wu, maybe Meth, Red. Anybody over there from Def Jam, I'm feeling Joe Budden. Joey's one of my guys. Eminem, obviously I'm a fan of his. Pretty much my feel toward MCs is, if you really got heart, you got passion, let's get on and do something. I like doing stuff with people that's real.

Method Man: So, there's not a collaboration that's about to go down with 'NSYNC or Christina Aguilera?

Cena: I won't be doing that.

A native of the mean streets of North Philadelphia MC Chief Kamachi started out rhymin' and spittin' like many of his contemporary wannabes and established artists who were getting regular air play promoting the Thug Life but Chief Kamachi also listened to and appreciated a variety of sources and genres especially the conscious Ol' School lyricists like the Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron and culturally conscious Hip Hop pioneers RaKim, KRS- One and Bran Nubian, Big Daddy Kane and X Clan. His personal quest for knowledge of self and kind led him into the Nation of Islam, a NOI sub-sect called The Five Percenters when he was around eleven years old. When he was eighteen he was initiated into the Yoruba Priesthood and most recently he has studied Ancient Kemetic metaphysical principles, divination and astrology which in turn produced an inner transformation and heightened consciousness that manifested in a new perspicuity, outlook and approach to his craft. As a result Chief Kamachi has emerged as one of the most articulate advocates for cultural awareness and rectitude in the Hip Hop community. He has spent the last few years successfully working with off the corporate radar screen groups like Army of Pharaohs, Jedi Mind Tricks and artists like Last Emperor and Maylay Sparks. He has appeared on over nineteen albums by various artists and now Chief Kamachi whose Kemetic priestly name is Ausu Ra Utcha Ab is set to launch a solo album Cult Status on the Good Hands Records independent label with a debut single set for early April release. Activist attorney Michael Coard had Chief Kamachi as a keynote speaker in his popular Hip Hop 101 class at Temple University's Pan African Studies Community Education Program a grass roots community education series that attracts young and old alike. Coard a successful trial lawyer, community activists and radio talk show host teaches the history and finer points of the sub-culture known as Hip Hop. Chief Kamachi held court lecturing, participating in a question and answer session and doing some impromptu freestyle.

Kamachi revealed the meaning of his name. "Ka in Kemetic philosophy means the personality, Ma is the first syllable of Maat Divine Law and Chi is the life force or Ra force." He elaborated on the importance of racial self-respect, knowing one's history and culture and the importance of music as a programming tool. "Right now you have the industry, the machine and the are designing music for our youth to listen to these days to keep them away from the truth about life and keep them away from their culture especially the inner city youth. Music is powerful in Yoruba music is governed by Oshun in Kemetic Philosophy music is governed by the deity we call Heru. In this culture you just get a mike and you can come up and say anything. To be a Griot you must speak things of importance, in order to teach our children we put it in songs because children learn faster in a state of trance when the music and message by-passes their state of consciousness." Kamachi stressed the importance of being a responsible artist. "The inner city is turned out right now in Hip Hop. A lot of these European businessmen are looking for the next thing, but there is a lot of power in the voice of this thing we call Hip Hop but there has to be some accountability. You got this rapper named Eminem going around saying 'My mom is a bitch' this and that, a Black Man would never do that. I don't care what we felt about our women we are not going to say "My mom is a bitch' to the world and then try to justify it. That's not nation building that's detrimental. Me, I'm going to take responsibility as far as bringing the truth to the youth and let them know you don't have to be ignorant. I wear my baggy stuff, whatever but I'm not no idiot. People look at us and judge us by the way we look and a lot of them are right because a lot of these guys get up here an they talk and hey have nothing to talk about." He explained why most of the songs were catered to females. "Why are the biggest songs in rap music catered to women? If you want to destroy a nation, you destroy the woman; you destroy the womb the child comes through, that's how you destroy a nation and that's what's going on. You got a platinum selling song that says 'My girl's a ho' and you got a million people reciting that, it's a mantra. These songs are not just songs. The videos are about gettin' our minds. I see it in my own children, they sing the songs and try to act them out."

Kamachi shared what he believes is his primary objective and mission. "For me it's deeper than videos and stuff like that. For me it's a way of get my people back, that's my main objective in life is to reclaim my African identify and bring children up the way they are supposed to be brought up. This whole single parenthood thing is outrageous, the way it's done is not working. The way to bring it back is through Hip Hop. I'm not looking to exploit the women, I'm not looking to exploit the brothers or anything; Im trying to build music wise and business wise. I never thought I'd see the day when we'd have something like this at a college, this is good." In keeping with his philosophy of conscious awareness Chief Kamachi eschews the corporate copy cat formula, trying to be like everyone else and doing what everyone else is doing. "Its' a formula and once you know that, it's a game. They sit and figure out how they can max out on you in the industry, in the machine. Me selling a million records versus someone on a major label is a big difference. I sell 50,000 record I make a quarter million dollars, I sell 50,000 records for MCA I'm not making nothin'. They (the artists on major labels) get twenty percent of the wholesale and they have to give their agent twenty percent of that and pay their lawyer ten percent. Me I get $8 off every album. All artists go through hard times but what helped me was my knowledge of self and what I knew about me and my history. That's what propelled me."

Chief Kamachi has aligned himself with the independent record label Good Hands Records and his latest project Cult Status will be released in a few weeks. When asked the best way for an artist to get his or her music out the Kamachi replied "It's about making good music. The best way is to have your own music and do it word of mouth because if the people want it the DJ's have to play it. But to get it in that position is ridiculous because there are a lot of greasy palms. People are spending a lot of money to get these records played. That's still a fight for me, but there is a way. You just have to be strong. It's bigger than me, it's about my people. My single will be out April 1 and my album will be out July 27."

Rapper Redman continues to boost his acting resume and has signed on to star in "Seed of Chucky," the fifth installment of the "Chucky" horror series.

The latest installment started production March 15 in Romania. Redman will star as himself in the film, which centers around the character Glen, the orphan doll offspring of Chucky and his bride Tiffany.

The movie is directed by Don Mancini and being produced by Focus Features, which is owned by Vivendi/Universal, the same company that owns the Island Def Jam Music group.

"We get a kick out of Chucky, and we're not scared to admit it," Focus co-presidents David Linde and James Schamus said. "Don Mancini has come up with a very fresh take for the franchise, and this Halloween, new viewers and longtime Chucky fans alike are in for bloody good fun."

The flick is scheduled to open in theaters October 29.

In related news, Redman and Method Man's untitled Fox sitcom is now in production in New Jersey.

Based off an idea by Method Man, the sitcom focuses on two rappers who buy a house in suburban New Jersey, only to have their wild parties interrupted when one of the rapper's mother moves in.

New Orleans-based rap artist, Turk (formerly of Cash Money and Hot Boys fame, AKA Tab Virgil) is slated to release his highly anticipated third solo album, Penitentiary Chances on KOCH Records on April 27. The album’s release is being planned as the rapper is being held on $750,000.00 bond, on charges of attempted murder of a Memphis Deputy Sheriff. The album’s title comes from a song that was on his debut album, Raw And Uncut...

Turk maintains his innocence in the case. A second charge against the rapper was dropped when early ballistics tests showed that a second officer was shot by another police officer that was present at the scene.

A legal defense fund has just been set up for the 23-year old rapper.

KOCH Records General Manager & Executive Vice President Alan Grunblatt states, “I consider Turk a real friend. I’m heartbroken about his current woes. His new record will help fund his legal efforts and will appeal to Hot Boys fans.”

Turk, who is being held in maximum security, says he appreciates the support that is coming in, some of it from high-profile figures in the hip hop world, who have asked to remain anonymous. Turk says that he has no idea whether or not his arrest will have any impact on sales of the album, but that he doesn’t expect it to. “My fans would support my album regardless, but it’s a quality album, and it’s going to be worth their ends,” he promises. “Get my album,” he says, “because you’ve got love for Turk.”

Among the highlights on the new album is the track, “Heartache,” Turk stated from his prison cell, “It’s a positive rap, and I’m asking where the love is. I’m also saying, stop the killing, stop the drugs, stop going to jail. It’s a message song.”

“Music Makes Me High” is also expected to get the attention of hip hop fans nationwide. Turk, a former heroin addict, says, “Music is my anti-drug. Music makes me high. R&B is like my downer and hip hop is my upper. It energizes me.”

“Raw & Off The Chain” is straight gangsta, while, tracks like “Do This For The Money” also feature Turk’s trademark, skin-tight, Southern-style lyrical slangin.’ Other titles on the upcoming album include “I Aint’ Just Rapping,” “Ya Heard,” and “Get It How I Live.” Some of the songs are autobiographical, while others are not, he explains. “I love to rap,” says Turk, who says he has been writing more raps while being held in prison. He adds that despite his present situation, “I am at peace with God and with myself.”

BG, Turk’s label manager and fellow Hot Boy says, “Turk is my friend and will always be my friend. I hope when this is all over the four of us can get back together and record a new Hot Boys album”.

Turk’s previous attorney, Scott Crawford, was recently arrested by the FBI on charges of obstruction of justice, bribery possession of crack cocaine and possession of an illegal handgun, all of which were unrelated to Turk’s case. Turk’s new legal representation is the Memphis-based legal team of Glenn Wright and Lee Wilson.

The preliminary hearing for the case will be held on March 31.

For those who wish to make donations, checks are payable to the Tab “Turk” Virgil Legal Defense fund, and may be sent in care of Da King And I Management, LLC, PO Box 73131, Baton Rouge, LA 70874-3131
