The Relativez to release new third album

Thanks to a steady grind that started in thier native Inglewood, California and has spread throughout the Western United States, The Relativez have become one of hip-hop's hottest underground acts. Real-life cousins Dogg and Big Wy built a sizable following with 2000's Dirty Money, a bone-crushing collection that won over fans with its realistic portrayal of life in Killa Cali.

With 2002's well-received The Takeover, which featured such California rhyme icons as Snoop Dogg and WC and sold more than 15,000 copies independently, The Relativez staked their claim as one of California's best rap groups. Now on its third album, the magnificent Money Respect Money, The Relativez have put themselves in position to become superstars.

The album's title reflects one of life's truisms. "Anything of its kind respects each other," Dogg says. "A broke person respects a broke person more than he respects somebody with money and a person with money respects somebody with money more than he respects a broke person. That's why gangsters only hang with gangsters, cowards only hang with cowards, hoes hang with hoes and pimps hang with pimps."

Even as their notoriety increases, The Relativez remain rooted in the streets that raised them. Case in point: "The Ghetto," an inspirational, feel-good celebration of life in the 'hood that features a choir of children in the chorus. "That song, I didn’t even have to write that rap down," Dogg explains. "I could have gone in there and just freestyled that one. Everything that's on there, that's how we lived it. If you're in the ghetto, you already know. Ice cream trucks only come to the ghetto. In the ghetto, we made our own games that we could play on the street."

That type of optimism extends to "Fly'n High," where Dogg and Big Wy expound upon their hood tactics over the type of live instrumentation that gives you the feel of The Relativez "Unplugged." On "Summertime," The Relativez are joined by Butch Cassidy for a tribute to a lifestyle that extols pool parties in the middle of January.

While each of these cuts showcases Dogg and Big Wy's upbeat sides, other parts of Money Respect Money are more gruff. "Pimpin'," which features Too Short, breaks down the world's second oldest profession over a beat seemingly pulled from a Blacksploitation film, while "Like We Do" contains the type of West Coast funk that made The Relativez one of California’s most promising acts.

In fact, Big Wy says that even though "Like We Do" has a decided California sound, it will connect with fans around the world. "We've got a core base of fans that’s here at home and you've always got to give your people first what they want to hear," he says. "That will be a song where it will start off at home but it will end up somewhere else because you will be able to relate to a lot of things that we're saying in the song. Everybody wants to shake haters off them and do their own thing."

The Relativez then explore how people react to your success on "Niggaz Only Love U" and examine how people change on "Every Nigga," which features Krayzie Bone. Dogg and Big Wy turn their attention to the ladies on "Would U Still Luv Me?" where they ask their ladies a variety of questions to test their loyalty, and on "What Would U Do?" they put themselves in the position of having to choose between two women.

Ironically, it was two women who laid the foundation for The Relativez. Dogg and Big Wy's grandmothers are sisters who lived around the corner from each another in Inglewood. Although they hung out with a group of cousins, Dogg and Big Wy gravitated toward one another. Dogg, a Run-DMC devotee, was a seasoned freestyler, while Wy, who favored EPMD, recorded his first song when he was just 12.

But the group of cousins put their musical dreams on hold once a family tragedy struck. One of their cousins was killed and the desire to make music faded. After taking some time off, Dogg and Big Wy reconnected and in 1998 decided to become a duo. They decided to call themselves The Relativez.

The group earned a reputation in Inglewood and had enough buzz to land appearances on a number of landmark albums, appearing on the double platinum Murder Was The Case soundtrack, the Too Gangsta For Radio and Bangin' On Wax compilations and Snoop Dogg's Dead Man Walking.

Their high-octane verses earned them a number of fans, but the pair knew that they needed to step up in order to capitalize on their newfound fame. "Rapping in the hood don't get you paid," Dogg explains. "It just gives you lots of fans. Everybody used to tell us, 'Ya'll hard. You need to make an album.'"

So, in 2000, Dogg and Big Wy took their fans' advice, found an investor in friend Tata and released Dirty Money. The album sold 4,000 copies locally and, after a lay off, they returned with their brutal second album. "We were mad on The Takeover," Big Wy says. "We had shit to prove and I had just gotten out of jail. People thought we were going to fall off after Dirty Money."

That didn't happen. In fact, Money Respect Money demonstrates that The Relativez only get better with time, as this is their best, most impressive release to date.

"The Relativez are trying to run long, not run fast," Dogg says. "You see a lot of groups out here, they made one hit album with a different sound and everybody is on their bandwagon. Then, all of a sudden, they're like a balloon with a hole in it: They're falling straight to the floor. The Relativez are trying to run long. We ain't trying to do 40 meters. We're trying to do the marathon with this rap game."

Five FT Of Black Moon Convicted On Drug Charges

Bild

Five FT of rap group Black Moon was convicted yesterday (March 6) for the alleged sale of an illegal substance, stemming from an incident in 2002.

The rapper is facing four to nine years, pending sentencing which is scheduled for April 1.

Black Moon recently dropped an album, Total Eclipse on Duck Down, which featured Five FT prominently.

According to Duck Down CEO Dru Ha, when Five FT was arrested, no drugs or marked money was found and he was convicted based solely on police testimony.

"Whether Five was guilty or not, it seems completely unfair that an individual can face 4-9 years in prison for the alleged sale of less than 5 grams of cocaine," Duck Down CEO Dru Ha told AllHipHop.com. "I don't know the technicalities of the laws, but I would bet if a college kid was convicted for the sale of a pound of weed, they wouldn't be facing 4-9 years. They were able to convict him as an alleged accomplice to the individual who made the sale."

Dru Ha said the group was enjoying a successful return to the rap game with their recent album and that Five was featured on more songs on Total Eclipse than on any previous Black Moon records.

"He really stepped his rap game up, both with lyrical substance and delivery," Dru Ha said. "Buckshot and Evil Dee will continue to record and perform under the name Black Moon."

The group is scheduled to film a video for their second single "This Goes Out To You" next weekend and will then head off to Canada and Europe for a three week tour.

Chicago native Bumpy Johnson has inked a deal with Free 4 All, a new label distributed by Atlantic and headed up by industry veteran, Free Maiden.

According to Maiden, the rapper was the subject of an intense bidding war after hitting the mixtape circuit and getting airplay on both of Chicago's commercial and Hip-Hop and Pop radio stations.

"Bumpy is like 50 Cent out there in Chicago," Maiden told AllHipHop.com. "I gotta guy from Chicago named Phil Edwards that has been a partner of mine for years. The last time he said he had something special, it was Kanye West. And I managed Kanye for a long time."

The rapper released two mixtapes, "Welcome to Grimeyville" and "Live From Bedrock," that moved almost 20,000 units combined.

"Me being in the game from an executive standpoint, in terms of having presence, he had that. He had a retail story. Everything he released sold immediately. The first time I met him, he had a show in the park. Children, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, everyone was out there. If you walked through the neighborhoods, they knew him. He's already a star on the street."

Maiden said that Atlantic and Warner Music Group was the best place to take his Free 4 All imprint. The major factor that swayed his decision was the coming of Lyor Cohen, who left Island Def Jam to head up the label.

"Lyor is someone that I always admired. Super aggressive, take no prisoners guy," Maiden said. "He's been associated with so many successful executives. It wasn't about the money. I wanted to go somewhere I feel the people can execute with HipHop Atlantic has alot of success, especially with Twista, who is also from Chicago. Atlantic's President Craig Kallman knows what he's doing. These talented people are the perfect combination."

Johnson's untitled CD is scheduled to hit stores towards the end of the year.

Zitat U-God:
When you're dealing with a group of magnitude you have got to understand
that sometimes he might not knew what he [RZA] was doing or saying but I can
recall him saying that this guy is better than this guy and this guy is better
than that guy and this guy is better than that guy. And that also deals with
separation. We are all as one and really nobody is better than nobody. Basically,
we are here all for a cause. But he might be caught up in drama situation the
way it was.

"I caught that article that got posted yesterday or the day before. Calling me a devil and unrighteous. We never put our business on the street. That's first and foremost. That's not how we get down. And the secondly, your choice of words. You're saying slavery, devil and unrighteousness and you know you're dealing with god cipher divine. You know I never deal with separation. My main thing is unity, I'm the one that said we have got to unify to get this world. It's your choice of words that hurt me. I'm the only one that had your back when the others wasn't."

"juicy inside stories about me and myself dealing with the Wu-Tang. That's what it's basically about, my life story. Just growing up in the rap world being with Wu-Tang"

There is a rumor out there that Dirt McGirt a.k.a ODB might be leaving ROC to go with Slip-N-Slide Records. We cannot say if this rumor is true or not.

Tha Row Says Crooked I Still Signed

Bild

According to representatives of incarcerated mogul Suge Knight, rapper Crooked I is still under contract to Tha Row.

"Crooked I is still signed," Tha Row's spokesman Jonathan Wolfson told AllHipHop.com. "This all stems from the upcoming release of Kurupt's album Against The Grain. There might have been a jealously element because Kurupt's new album is dropping first."

Knight's sanctioning of the release of Kurupt's album and the fact that the rapper's highly anticipated album Say Hi To The Bad Guy is what created the rift between Crooked I and the label.

Crooked I told Ballerstatus.net that his contract expired March 5th after being signed since 1999. He said he was in the process of working out amicable terms with Tha Row.

"I'm out here, still grinding, working on a few things," Crooked I said.

Wolfson denied that Crooked I was ever released from his contract.

"We will be proceeding with legal action against various companies for interference of contract because he is still signed," Wolfson said.

Crooked I could not be reached for comment as of press time.

Joe Budden And Game End Beef

Bild

After a heated volley of rhymes via mixtapes, rappers Joe Budden and The Game have officially squashed their beef.

The two rappers, some affiliates and Game's manager Jimmy Henchmen, met Friday (March 5) at an undisclosed location to put their differences aside, Budden's confirmed with AllHipHop.com.

Their beef started when Budden referenced G-Unit on a song that featured The Game, Stack Bundles and Budden on a Clue mixtape.

The Game, who records for G-Unit/Aftermath, felt Buddens disrespected him in the way he rapped about G-Unit on the song.

Budden's verse was recorded after The Game and Stack Bundles laid their verses.

While Budden and The Game have let their past issues go, Budden said that he still has issues with 50 Cent.

Budden and 50 Cent's beef started when 50 Cent gave the New Jersey rapper the "Step Your Rap Game Up" when he was guest editor of XXL magazine.

Necro, Khia Banned In Australia

Bild

Rappers Necro and Khia have been banned from being purchased by children in Australia under new censorship rules.

The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) introduced a four level censorship guideline three years ago.

The first two levels warn about the explicit content of a recording, while level three is a ban of sale to persons under the age of 18.

Necro's Brutality Part One and Khia's "My Neck, My Back" and her album Thug Misses were both banned under the censorship rules.

"There really isn't anyone as explicit as me on any level," Necro told AllHipHop.com. "Maybe Geto Boys or N.WA. It doesn't bother me because they are tame over there. It's not a big deal. My records are still in all the stores, because they are distributed by the biggest distributor out there."

This is the first time the level three punishment has been enforced.

Level four, which no one has achieved yet, is a total ban in Australia.

Necro is preparing to release a new album The Pre-Fix For Death, which is slated to hit stores August 3, 2004.

"Australia was founded by a bunch of criminals, so who knows what's up with them anyway," Necro said.

zu ecay Uno:

"I just got off the phone a couple moments ago with one of the dopest artists in San Diego, Ecay Uno. It looks like it's gonna be a busy year for him and his label Bomb Leery Entertainment. Dropping this month is the "Leery Gang: Keep It In The Family" Compilation featuring Dago's hottest artists. That'll be followed shortly after by Cee Wee 3's album "West Coast Official." Also dropping later this year will be Ecay Uno & Cyco City "Wall Street To Concrete" Volumes 1 & 2. And then finally "As A Man" is currently underway which is the highly anticipated sophmore release from Ecay Uno. So as you can see, 2004 is a very busy year for Bomb Leery. If what we've heard from them in the past is any indication, their's gonna be some heated material coming from them this year."

Joo Leute...es gibt einen Grund zum Feiern

Diddy To 'Retire,' Juggles Projects Along The Way

Bild

First one hip-hop heavyweight retires, and now another one is hanging up the mic, too? The answer is yes, according to Sean “P.Diddy” Combs, who’s going to retire after he releases his next album, titled PD5.

“I got a chance to have my dream come true, and I wanted to make sure I made the decision as to when I dropped my last album," Diddy told MTV.com. "If I don't feel like this album is an incredible piece of work, then I'm cool with the albums I've done. I don't have to put out another album."

While Diddy will no longer perform as a rapper, he insists his announced retirement doesn’t call for a ceremonious send off.

"I don't want nobody to just go crazy or nothing," he said. "It's not going to be as dramatic or traumatic as Jay-Z retiring."

In the meantime, Combs and the Bad Boy staff will prep new releases by Carl Thomas, New Edition, Eightball & MJG, Diddy’s long-awaited dance album, and a Biggie duets album.

With all the projects P.Diddy will oversee in the coming months, including his Broadway debut in New York, the man who told us he “can’t stop” might want to at least consider pacing himself. Recently, the music mogul stumbled while on stage at a ceremony for the New York Metro Area's Achievement in Radio Awards. According to a briefing in the New York Times, Diddy stumbled as he spoke and presented an award. He later admitted he took part in an eight-hour rehearsal for “A Raisin in the Sun,” prior to attending the event.

Bad Boy's 10th Anniversary: The Hits, featuring songs by The Notorious B.I.G., P.Diddy, and Ma$e is in stores now.

The College Dropout finally got to put on his graduation cap and tassel. On Thursday Kanye West donned commencement-ceremony headgear in jest at a surprise platinum party held in his honor at the club Nocturne.

Besides shipping 1 million units of his own project, West had even more reason to poke his chest out in pride. He'd just finished the production on "Talk About Our Love," the first single from Brandy's as-yet-untitled upcoming LP.

Atlantic Records isn't divulging much information on the record, except to note that West raps on the song and that it will hit the radio around the first week of April. Besides West, Brandy has also worked with producers Timbaland and Walter Millsap on her album.

Meanwhile, Kanye is keeping busy with his other peers. "I Want You," a record he produced for Janet Jackson, has hit the radio. The "Louis Vuitton Don" is also in the midst of trying to solidify a label home for his imprint, Very Good Music. His stable of artists will include Common, GLC, Consequence and John Legend, all of whom appear on The College Dropout.

At West's shindig in NYC on Thursday, the Chicago native was in top form, giving two speeches and rapping "Jesus Walks," "Slow Jamz" and "Through the Wire." The beatmaking MC was originally under the impression that he was attending a party for Damon Dash.

West was caught off guard when Joe Budden, Christina Milian and several employees from Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam were there to help him celebrate the success of The College Dropout.

The next single off the lauded opus will be "Jesus Walks." West has already filmed part of the track's video.

The 1983 film "Scarface" depicted Al Pacino as a cuban druglord named Tony Montana as a remake of the 1932 original about the rise and fall of Italian immigrant Tony Camonte.

Now 21 years later, the USA Network are planning to remake the classic film once again. But this time as an updated urban version with a black cast in the inner-city of Los Angeles during the crack epidemic of the 80s.

Producer Charles "Chic" Eglee has been brought on board to executive produce the project and production is scheduled to start as early as the fall for a 2005 debut.

A director and cast have yet to be announced, but Eglee has said that he will create a cast loosely based on the primary characters from the original films.

Defari has also been brought aboard to develop a soundtrack for the film along with serving as a technical adviser.

A key prosecution witness in the murder trial of Corey "C-Murder" Miller testified yesterday at Miller´s hearing for a new trial that she didn´t see him shoot a 16-year-old.
The woman said she witnessed a man known as "Calliope Slim" with a gun before the boy was shot.
She said she didn´t reveal the information because no one asked her.
