With an open schedule & summer in full swing, RZA invited the entire Clan to California. "Originally we were there to do a Wu-Tang album" GZA says. "But only a few individuals were out there". U-God, Cappadonna & Ghostface Killah, who was nursing an injured leg, and Method Man were missing. The remaining Clan quickly got to work, but the chemistry between between 2 members was surprisingly strong. After Raekwon & GZA knocked out 3 or 4 songs together, the Genius lived up to his moniker. "I was talking to RZA & said, 'I'll do a Cuban Linx album with Raekwon," GZA says. "I told Rae, too, and he was with it".
As of November 05, RZA & Raekwon have recorded approximately 25 songs for Cuban Linx II and are now whittling them down. Outside producers include Jay Dee/J. Dilla, Scram Jones, Justice & Dr. Dre. However, at press time, none featured Ghostface Killah aka Tony Starks. He's working on his next solo album, Fish Scale, but promised an 11th hour contribution. "We came to an agreement that he will play his part," Raekwon says "He already gave his word."
Replacing the brutish Tony Starks on Cuban Linx II are the more cerebral Maximillion (GZA) & Rollie Fingers (Inspectah Deck), a plot point that will be explained on the album. "Ghost is a straight knock-you-out- type of n*gga," RZA says. "Maybe this time, the way Raekwon is moving, he's thinking, 'Maybe we don't need the bully'. He had to go and get some [other] people for the job. But I think [Ghost] will make an appearence in the movie." Ghostface could not be reached for comment, but his limited role will surely spark a debate by fans over the legitimacy of an album missing Wu-Tang's most bankable star. "I can't really take Ghost's place," GZA says. "But I think it will be well recieved. I'm very confidant about everything I spit."
He's playing a rough draft of Cuban Linx II for SCRATCH (pg 81) & while he'll insist the album is very rough, in its infant stages it still sounds better anything the Clan has released post Supreme Clientele. In terms of sequels, its a lot more The Godfather II than The Godfather III. But even with reassurances about the album's potential, RZA still searches for perfection. "When you hear the skits, you'll hear more of what's going on here".
Heres what Rae/ RZA/ GZA say about the songs so far.
1. Thug World (Raekwon) "Thug World" is one of them ill hooligan tracks. That is a throwing chairs type of beat. RZA had to give us one them 'Wu-Tang Clan Aint Nuthin Ta Fuck With' type beats.
2. State Of Grace (Raekwon) I caught an intense vibe that day. I felt like the whole world was against me & I had to vent real quick. I put all the hate that I be around into that.
3. Rock Stars & Smoking Barrels (RZA) GZA's verse is about someone with 3 children committing suicide. Deck then comes in with a style that's so unpredictable. He sounds like a brand new MC on that. The sonics just sounded like a smack in the motherfucking face.
4. Kareem Khan (GZA) I was going to see Raekwon, and [my son] Justice was like, "Maybe I should play him some of my beats." That beat was the 1st or 2nd beat he played for Rae. When I got to the studio that night, Rae had already laid down his verse. It sounded so fat, so chunky that I just had to get on it.
(Raekwon) I kept looking at Justice like, "You getting a check."
5. No Matter How Hard You Try (Raekwon) I want to hear what a n*gga do off an ill beat with just 2 drums on it. This is what I feel like the game is missing. People need to have some characters on wax instead of just being like they tough all day. That tough shit is weak. Be real, don't be tough.
