Deceo Ellipsis

Deceo Ellipsis

What’s up Deceo, how you doin’ bro? Would you be so kind to introduce yourself to the audience? Name, age, where you’re from, what you’re doing…

Shup good people… my name is Deceo Ellipsis, I’m 27, from Vancouver BC Canada, and I produce underground hip hop CDs.

How long have you been producing for and how did this whole thing start for you?

I started make’n beats in 1994, this whole thing really started back in 1988 tho. Watching rap music videos on t.v., I just wanted to be in a rap group. So I bought 2 old technics turntables and a mixer when I was 13, and kept going from there.

Who have you been influenced by?

Man… lots of influences over the years. First I’d have to say De La Soul! The album “3 Feet High And Rising” was my favorite when I was young! My favorite producers are Shock G (Digital Underground), Dj Premier (Gangstarr), the RZA (Wu Tang Clan), Dr. Dre. I really don’t try to sound like other producers tho, or a genre. I’m mostly just inspired by what I’m sampling at the time.

Which equipment do you prefer/use? Where do you make your music? Do you have your own studio?

Yeah, I work at home in my own studio, wouldn’t want it any other way. I’ve always used a Kurtzwiel K 2000 S sampler / synth. But I’ve recently bought an Akai MPC 2000 XL (sampler), the sound quality is great, in the past I used my Alesis A-dat machine for recording (8 track analog tape). But will soon buy pro tools. I’m not that stoked on digital recording but I knew I would make the switch eventually. Analog rocks!

Is producing the only thing you do? Or are you a DJ / do you rap as well?

I can Dj, but I’m not a club Dj, don’t collect new vinyl, not a battle Dj, my scatching skills are stuck in 1992. I have a lot of classic old school hip hop vinyl, and would open for and / or Dj for someone at a show, but that’s about it. I also like to write rhymes… so I guess I rap too.

What’s first, the lyrics or the beats?

The beats… I make the beat first, the rapper writes to the beat… if that’s what you meant?

Yeah, that’s what I meant. What inspires you and how do you start creating a beat. Can you break down which production steps you go through?

Well first I roll a fat blunt… just kidding, I just need some new records to listen to for sampling, I listen till I hear something I can use, then sample it, program a drum track to it, 5 mins later a beat is made… I left out a few things… but I hate to type.

You did quite a few beats for Moka Only a while ago. He’s with Battle Axe Records now and is mainly producing his own music. Are you two still working together?

I think so, and I did a few albums for Moka not just a few beats, the 4 CDs i produced for him are my best known work. We haven’t done a CD together since 2001, but we’ve talked recently and are planning to do another one in 2006. I ‘m working on the beats for it right now. Moka is also producing my album… remember I rap too.

So far, your releases were more or less underground and have been released independently. What does music mean to you?

I just want to make music that I’m stoked on, sample musicians that inspire me, work with rappers that I like to listen to… I’m not try ‘n to be the best, I just love make’n good music .

Who else are you working together with? Give us a little overview to whose music you’ve produced so far, please.

Well, you know I’ve worked with Moka Only, I guess I’ll list off some cats just for you… even tho I hate typing! … Ishkan, Jeff Spec, Okbar Ras Mufasa, the Telepathics, X-Ivy Vines… ok that wasn’t too painful, all those people are from Vancouver Island exept my homie Okbar, he’s from Vancouver like me.

Any specific plans for the future?

Yes, I want to record another CD with Moka Only, record my CD produced by Moka Only, and distribute both CDs, and then work on doing it again in 2007. Other than that… no major future plans.

Thanks a lot for the interview. Do you have any last words or shout outs?

Werd up man… this is my first interview ever! I mean really… who’d want to talk to me anyway. I gotta shout out all the hip hop heads and my fans in Germany. I’m stoked you digg my music! If you want to find out more about me, and download 3 of the Moka Only CDs that I produced. Check out my website… www.deceoellipsis.com. Thanks for this opportunity. Mathis… peace.
