HOUSTON – Investigators believe a member of the Houston rap group ABN was the target of a shooting outside a strip club that killed the rapper and two other people early Wednesday morning.
Coy "Poppa C" Thompson, 23; Erica Rochelle Dotson, 30; and Carlos Durell Dorsey,31, died outside of the Diamonds Gentlemen’s Club (formerly Scores Cabaret), around 3:15 a.m. after a performance by Poppa C’s fellow ABN member, Trae Tha Truth.
Trae, 31, whose legal name is Frazier Othel Thompson, and 37-year-old Willie Watkins were also shot, but their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Investigators said the shooting happened as patrons were leaving the concert.
The suspect or suspects were still at large Thursday.
Investigators said Poppa C was involved in a domestic dispute on June 17, 2012, and had received threats on his life.
They believe Trae, Dorsey, Dotson and Watkins were all struck by gunfire intended for Poppa C. A source close to the investigation said Dotson, a mother of three, had just asked for Trae’s autograph when she was killed.
Police said Poppa C was also involved in a similar shooting incident outside a nightclub on Bissonnet on November 25, 2011, in which Dominique "Money Clip" Brown was killed.
No arrests have been made in connection with that shooting, either, but investigators said it’s not clear if the two incidents are related.
