Do or Die takes the independent route this time around the rap circle. Having six releases (five albums and one greatest hits) on major label Rap-A-Lot, the group finally leaves to join with independent label Legion Records (Ric Jilla of Hammond, Indiana also signed). Already in motion with a brand new single Higher featuring Kanye West, Do or Die looks eager to continue from where they left off. Every album of theirs has had The Legendary Traxster, and their latest effort Die Hard doesn’t kill that production streak. In fact, most fans prefer this combination the most. However, the laid back group gets even more Chicago beats from Kanye West. Do or Die surrounds themselves with the city’s top producers and insists on forging ahead no matter independent or not.

Payroll does all his own work while keeping a self-made profile. Hailing from the North Pole (Chicago’s north side), the mobile rapper gets around from place to place in the Midwest. Recording on the opposite end of the city, Roll has been prepping his upcoming album Broke, Starvin & Gangbang’n on 40 Thievz Records (Cap-1’s label). He’s also found on Tension’s (from Gary, Indiana’s SGP Records) recent release, Da Induction. Bringing two Midwest cities together enables strength to a region ready to blow up at any minute. It appears after Payroll’s original hit Never Change produced by Kanye West, he has been consistent, creating good music for the streets. With Cap-1 and the 40 Thievz at his side, there’s no
stopping Payroll’s quest for success.

The Legendary Traxster beats his way to new territory with authority. Having cooked so many classics for his city, will anybody outside Chicago get mixed into his recipes? Apparently, Cam’Ron, Mariah Carey and Tech N9ne plan on being the new vocal ingredients. To start off, Trax is set to produce Adrenaline Rush Part 2 for Cam’Ron on his future project Purple Haze. Slated for a July release, the original Chi-Town duo Twista & Yung Buk of PsychoDrama will also come back for the sequel track. Cam has expressed liking Twista for years, thus making one of his (Twista) best songs have a follow-up. Next on his agenda, the legendary beat maker has work to do with singing-sensation Mariah Carey! Trax involved for one song on her album, finds himself again with Twista (long live guest appearances), who will be featured. America’s diva should certainly mesh well with two of Chicago’s finest. Furthermore, the Midwest gets ready to experience something never done before. Kansas City rapping beast, Tech N9ne will get a windy city boost from The Legendary Traxster (producing) and WhiteFolks (appearing) on his future Strange Music release. All their unique talents captured together only can result in Midwest mayhem.

With signature beats too professional and complex, we get distracted from the fact that Trax is a pretty good rapper too. In the future, be on the look out for his sophomore album Portrait of a Hustler, Chicago’s version of the Dr. Dre classic The Chronic. Through his gifted abilities to make quality music, Traxster will always remain legendary.

-The Legendary Traxster: Portrait of a Hustler CD
Featuring Twista, WhiteFolks, PsychoDrama, Snypaz, Triple Darkness
Production by The Legendary Traxster
Release Date: N/A

Triple Darkness causes double trouble in the windy city with two projects in full throttle. On the way to releasing a Greatest Hits compilation, Triple Darkness also manages to work overtime bringing a second full album to life. Entitled Last Dayz, the group will receive aid on the beats by none other than The Legendary Traxster. Chicago’s beat pioneer and the entire trio haven’t collaborated since their 1997 single, Cold Blooded. This time around, Traxster produces three songss for Last Dayz, while Dawreck of the group handles the rest. Surely, when Chicago unifies artists and producers, only great things can happen. More unity appears in Triple Darkness’ music video for their first single Umm Hmm. Shot solely in the city, the group includes their DramaWard clique and plenty other local acts on screen, giving a taste of everyday street life. Indeed, Triple Darkness is making big moves, putting their mark in this rap industry..

-Triple Darkness: Greatest Hits CD
Featuring PsychoDrama, The Legendary Traxster, WhiteFolks, DramaWard, Never of Crucial Conflict
Production by Dawreck of Triple Darkness, The Legendary Traxster, Fat Cap Release Date: June

-Triple Darkness: Last Dayz CD
Featuring N/A
Production by Dawreck of Triple Darkness, The Legendary Traxster
Release Date: July

CWAL Mob gears up to release Illa WhiteFolks’ highly anticipated self-titled album (Illa WhiteFolks). This will be the first solo album entirely produced by The Legendary Traxster since Twista’s Adrenaline Rush in 1997. The essence of WhiteFolks initially became evident in 1999’s CWAL Ballaz Vol. 1. Since then, many fans impatiently wait for such an album as Illa WhiteFolks to surface. Numerous offers are on the table for CWAL as they weigh out their options. Set for an August release, WhiteFolks wastes no time off the clock. In fact, he’s used just about every form of promotion possible to keep his name in the streets. Appearing in albums (Do or Die’s Pimpin Ain’t Dead and Mob Axshin’s No Morals), magazines (The Source, XXL, Murder Dog etc.) and even a movie (wrote, directed and co-starred in Trust None); this man brings new meaning to the word “advertising.” Lastly, if that isn’t enough, you can still find him running his own music store The Tip. How much can one person do at a time? CWAL holds the cards to what will happen next to Chicago, not just with WhiteFolks, but with their entire Mob.

-Illa WhiteFolks: Illa WhiteFolks CD
Production by The Legendary Traxster
Release Date: August

KRS-ONE & Chilly Chill

The legendary blastmaster KRS-ONE is hitting the studio with Lench Mob member Chilly Chill to record some tracks...

It should be interesting to hear the OG New York MC over beats from an OG West Coast producer like Chilly Chill!

MC Hammer lebt noch...

Rapper Hammer was hit with a lawsuit earlier this month due to allegations that he placed his residence in a trust fund to avoid collection of a debt.

A lawsuit filed by Newstyle Media, based in Anaheim Hills, California, claims that hammer used his Stanley Burrell Irrevocable Children's Trust fund to hide ownership of his Tracy, California home.

According to local records Hammer has lived in the house since 1997, but between 1997 and 2002, the title was in another mans name.

The issues started when Hammer allegedly agreed to pay Newstyle Media over $250,000 to produce and distribute a CD.

Newstyle claimed it shipped almost 600,000 CD's in November of 2001, when Hammer dropped another album, Active Duty, on his own label.

Newstyle claims Hammer transferred the house into his trust's name, so it couldn't be listed as an asset during the debt collection process.

Hammer said that accusations were ridiculous and that he didn't remember doing business with the company.

Houston's own Lil' Flip has seen alot of success the past few months. His latest album U Gotta Feel Me debuted at #1 on Billboard's Rap/R&B charts in it's first week out and has been certified gold.

With the lead single "Game Over" is still receiving heavy airplay nationwide, Flip is coming with his second single featuring songstress Lea on "Sunshine," which is also gaining heavy airplay already.

"The single speaks for itself; it's already at over 3000 radio spins and will be going to Top 40 this week," Sandy Lal, Flip's manager & Attorney stated. "I asked Flip to collaborate with Lea and he just jumped right on it."

Even though Lil' Flip is not usually known for tracks like "Sunshine," he says that he wanted to do something for the ladies.

"Sunshine is a little different from what people have heard from me," Lil' Flip said of his new single. "I wanted a smooth track for the ladies this time. My manager Sandy originally did the song for Lea but then decided to put me on it."

Flip says it's something he can relate to and he kinda lays down the rules to the ladies that want to date a rapper. First rule is "patience" according to Flip.

"I wanted to lay down the rules for dating a rapper like myself," Flip continues. "Since I'm always on the road, she has to be patient. I can't be a steady boyfriend because of my schedule, but when I have the time, I will definitely give it to my babygirl."

This is out of the norm for Flip to do a ladies track, but he assures us fans both male and female will appreciate it.

Barely a week following Summer Jam 2, countless newspapers, websites and hip-hop fans are still talking about 50's disappointing set.

Though shots aimed at Lil Kim and Ja Rule initially drew a little laughter, most were annoyed that 50 dwelled on beefs from the past. Additionally, 50s little tit-for-tat with former G-Unit member Bang Em Smurf's crew, The Silverback Gorillas, has folks a bit peeved with the G-Unit general. After being booed in his hometown, many speculate that 50 will soon be the recipient of a backlash similar to Ja Rule if he doesn't humble himself soon.

If you've been wondering what up with Foxy Brown, wonder no more. On DJ Big Mike's latest mix CD, Cruel Summer 2K4, Foxy Brown announces that she's signed to S. Carter Records for $75 million. Over the instrumental to Terror Squad's new single "Lean Back," Foxy flip's the song into "Fall Back" and spits "ni99as is asking Fox about a deal / ni99a S. Carter... 75 mil."

Weeks ago, a video clip featuring Jay-Z "mushing" a woman in the face surfaced on the internet. The brief clip shows Hov entering a backstage area seemingly irritated before proceeding to "mush" a woman twice in front of his entourage, who watch without intervening. Many websites have reported on the clip, accusing Jay-Z of a recent assault on an innocent woman.

In fact, the video clip is nearly five years old, taken from footage in the 1999 movie Backstage, which highlighted the successful Hard Knock Life Tour. The woman in the clip is a Roc-A-Fella Records marketing executive and the hand-to-face action is some harmless rough-housing between "close friends." This is the official word on the clip, confirmed late Friday night by Roc-A-Fella Records.

Method Man and Redman's sitcom premiered on Fox earlier this week to little fanfare and weak reviews. While Fox reported their Wednesday night lineup, led by The Simple Life as successful, fans of Method Man and Redman seemed to be disappointed. Calling the show "stereotypical," the feedback is that fans hoped the half hour comedy could meet the standards set by the cult classic "How High." Many are saying they'll give the show a few more episodes before making a final decision to smash it.

Though it's been 7 years since Salt-N-Pepa's last studio album, Salt is plotting her return to Hip-Hop with her first solo set. However, don't expect Salt to record material in the same vein as "Push It." Salt's pen is now dedicated to God and her first single, "Pardon Me" showcases her new penchant for uplifting and positive lyrics. In the beginning of the second verse she offers, "The family that prays together / always stays together / I dream of days where we can give praise together / grow old and spend the rest of our days together."

Chicago-based rap trio D.O.D. taps the production talents of Kanye West, DJ Quik and Scott Storch on its upcoming self-titled album. Due Sept. 14, the set will be the first release for the veteran group -- formerly known as Do Or Die -- on Windy City-based The Legion Records, founded last year by Chicago real estate developer Rudolph Acosta.

The set's lead radio single is "Higher," which boasts a sample of Teddy Pendergrass' "You're My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration." The group turned to fellow Chicagoan West to produce and lend a guest appearance on the track. "By him being hot right now and what we're bringing to the table, it's just going to be another nuclear explosive song," group member Belo says. "I know it's going to blow." A.K. and N.A.R.D. complete the act.

West also guests on and produced the cut "Paid the Price," while Storch produced "Keep It Pimpin." DJ Quik handled the mix for "Pimp Like This" and "Church" featuring Johnny P. The set also features production from N.O. Joe (Scarface, The Geto Boys), the Legendary Traxster (Twista, Mystikal) and Waxmaster.

As Do Or Die, the group had a long association with the Rap-A-Lot label. Last year, the act's "Pimpin' Ain't Dead" (J Prince/Rap-A-Lot) debuted at No. 17 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It has sold 113,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The group's 1996 album "Picture This" (Rap-A-Lot/Noo Tribe/Virgin) featured the single "Po Pimp" featuring Twista, a No. 1 title on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. The album bowed at No. 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally, the same post as "Headz or Tailz" (Neighborhood Watch/Rap-A-Lot/Virgin) two years later. Those sets have sold 932,000 and 708,000 copies, respectively.
