Interview mit Rapper K of the SPC !
RAPPER K from SOUTH PARK COALITION (Houston, TX)
Rapper K is a rapper from Houston who is part of K-Rino’s massive South Park Coalition. He started rapping around twenty years ago but has only just got around to releasing his debut album ‘Long Time Coming’. The album is fifteen tracks of reality rap and features some heavy guest appearances from the likes of K-Rino, Dope-E from The Terrorists, Point Blank, Klondike Kat and LATE from Wolftown & SPC UK, as well as production from Dope-E, Domo from The Coughee Brothers and Tricksta from Wolftown & SPC UK. Distributed by Select-o-hits in the States this album is making some serious waves on the underground so RAGO Magazine sent Brendan Deane to get the lowdown.
Okay, before we get into this tell what does the K stand for in Rapper K and tell us how you got your name.
K is the first initial of my name…the rest speaks for itself.
You are from Houston; tell us about where you live and what the scene is like there?
South Park…where we grind all day.
Who are the main players? The record shops, the DJ’s, the rappers, the producers and radio stations?
SPC (South Park Coalition), StickHorse Records (Nina and Carla), DJ Chill, Goldenchild and DJ Love. Dope-E and Tricksta are the producers and the radio station would be 90.1 KPFT in Houston.
Twenty years deep in the game, and now you drop your solo debut album. How come it was so long coming?
I’ve been on the business side of the game and I just got tired of the garbage I was listening to on the radio…so I decided it was time to bring something with some substance to the table.
There are some awesome SPC collaborations on the album. Tell us about the guests and what they where like to work with.
It was incredible working with my SPC family. I also got a chance to work with three on the move rappers…M.E.N.I.S., Low-Key and Tre-8.
Have you done any music videos to any of the tracks?
I’ve done cameos on K-Rino’s videos.
Mixtapes seem to be a massive part of the US scene and the way that a lot of US acts promote their music, but South Park Coalition doesn’t really seem to be on that mixtape shizzle. Why do you think this is?
SPC was in the game, long before mixtapes. Not to knock mixtapes…it’s just not my thing.
How long did the album take to create?
One year. I took my time to make sure it was the way I wanted it to be.
How did you go about making the album? Did you have a lot of the ideas for the tracks before you recorded it, did you do it track by track or get a few tracks on the go all at the same time?
For the most part, I heard the tracks first and then came up with the concepts.
How would describe the album?
The album talks about a lot of real-life situations, it will make you think and understand. It’s not your typical rap album that talks about women, drugs and murder. If any of these things are mentioned, it’s not to glorify them, but to let you know that there are consequences to all negative actions.
Why do you think people should buy it?
Because it’s good!
I see LATE and Tricksta from SPC UK are involved in the album. Those grind hard for SPC in the UK mayne, so how did you hook up with them and what are they like to work with?
I hooked up with them through K-Rino. I have much respect for Late and Tricksta…they showed me a lot of love.
You are on a record label called Black Book International. Whose record label is this and who else is on the label? Tell us more!
K-Rino started BBI and I’m one of the first artists besides K-Rino on the label.
Are you looking to drop a new album in 2009 ?
(We hope so!) Let’s see how this one goes. LOL
