The recent news of Benzino severing his most obvious ties to The Source give us the opportunity to look at one of the most hated men in hip-hop from a different perspective. Benzino was never - as often falsely reported - a co-founder of the magazine (he hustled his way in when it had become the genre's leading periodical), but simply a local Boston rapper who had been putting out records since the mid-'80s. Call me naive, but paying dues and helping build a local scene are worth something in my book. Unlike many other people I therefore have a certain amount of respect for the man. Like most observers, however, I think that Benzino's personal ambitions have ruined what used to be the best hip-hop mag around.

When it came to having a career in rap, Raymond Scott has been irrepressible. For years, he lead The Almighty RSO, who after endless turmoil released their first full-length ten years after debuting with "The Greatest Show On Earth" in 1986. In the late '80s, he fronted the short-lived Made Men, before he finally went solo. In 1996, Benzino formed the production team Hangmen 3 with longtime partner DJ Deff Jeff (AKA Jeff 2X) and a third associate named Johnny Bananas. For a minute, it seemed as if Hangmen 3 would be able to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with, their name appearing in the credits of Nas' "Stillmatic," Prodigy's "H.N.I.C." and Cormega's "The True Meaning." They even released their own compilation ("No Skits Vol. 1"). Additionally, they contributed beats to each Benzino album.

Since I boycott Benzino as a solo artist, my reservoir of tracks to pick from is relatively small. The aptly titled "5 Minutes of Doom (Comin' From the Legion)" is off The Almighty RSO's 1994 EP "Revenge of da Badd Boyz" and produced by Raydog (Benzino) and Jeff, who stir this storming posse cut up with some nice beat/sampling variations. Of which "Quarter Past Nine" sounds like a slowed down, simpler version. We wrap things up with Made Men's "3 Stripe Killaz," which jacks Whodini's classic "Magic's Wand." Like the other two, this track features rapper Cool Gsus (AKA Mr. Gzus). For a final bit of trivia, the third Made Men member Antonio Twice Thou is the 'Antonio' in Antonio Ansaldi. Class dismissed. You may now go back to hating on Zino.
