www.dasetup.com - It was a typically chilly October night in Cleveland and Earpaint Entertainment president Edwin "Tony" Nicholas was headed to a showcase. "I didn't really know what to expect," explains Nicholas, "but I knew I had been invited to check out a rap group called D.S.U. and since I knew one of the members already, I went." Well, he did check them out and the rest, as they say, is history. Bringing raw energy, freshness and flavor that's "oh so tasty," Cleveland-based rap duo D.S.U. is poised to add a new chapter to the book of hip-hop. Their debut release on Earpaint Entertainment titled "Da Set Up" is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what D.S.U. is capable of. "They have some history," says manager Lamont Parsons. "D.S.U. is on another level lyrically." The personal growth and development that has resulted in today's D.S.U. began awhile back. D.S.U.'s members, Doc Scinista and Tice Da Tyrant have been rockin' the mic and movin' bodies for quite some time. Doc Scinista was born Derek Manley and is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He entered the world of hip-hop in the early 90's with his first complete solo release entitled "you Can't See Me." The title track as well as several others including "Still Tripping" and "Top Choice" received much love locally. Scin has been writing the hype lyrics since 1981 and has performed in local talent shows and cabarets. He has also performed in commercials for Cleveland area retailers. His musical influences include A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubians, Method Man and KRS-One. Tice Da Tyrant was born Keith Hamilton and is also a native of Cleveland, Ohio. Since grade school, Tice has been involved in various aspects of entertainment. He has rocked talent shows, the Glenville and Woodhill festivals (two widely popular annual events in Cleveland), and has opened for acts such as Public Enemy, MC Lyte and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. In addition to his rapping funk, Tice has also toured and appeared in videos as a dancer for Levert and Men-At-Large. Always wanting the spotlight on his rap skills, Tice cites his musical influences as LL Cool J, Run DMC, The O'Jays and Parliament Funkadelic, among others.
