A federal jury convicted rapper Tab “Turk” Virgil of three felony charges yesterday (August 9). Virgil was convicted of being a felon with a handgun, a fugitive with a handgun and a drug addict with a handgun.

The charges stem from a shootout during a January 2004 drug raid of an apartment. SWAT team member Deputy Chris Harris was shot in the jaw, hip arm and calf.

During the trial, Deputy Harris said he opened a double-door closed in the apartment and saw a bright muzzle flash. He said he immediately felt the bullets’ impact.

Harris said he traded fire with someone in the closet and that he could see bullets flying through the door and into the ceiling of the apartment.

Afterwards, police recovered a 9mm in the closet with six shells nearby. Ballistics evidence also stated the bullet that struck the officer in the jaw came from the 9mm.

While tests on Virgil’s hands came back inconclusive, prosecutors said the rapper had gunfire residue on his shorts.

Virgil’s attorney Javier Bailey told the jury that the rapper never fired a weapon. He said that officers botched the investigation.

Bailey argued that once police threw a flash-bang grenade into the apartment, no one would have been capable of retrieving a weapon.

Six officers present testified that they never saw Virgil with a gun in his hand and none of them saw him in the closet either.

The leader of the SWAT team, Sgt. Perry McEwen, said that Virgil and his girlfriend were ordered to crawl out of the bedroom after the shooting.

McEwen testified under oath that Virgil stated: "I thought we were being robbed."

Attorneys made their final arguments yesterday morning and the jury took just five hours to convict the chart-topping rapper, who made his mark as a member of Cash Money Records’ hit group, The Hot Boys.

The group featured fellow New Orleans rappers Juvenile, B.G. and Lil’ Wayne.

Virgil’s attorney expressed disappointment at the time the jury spent deliberating and has vowed to appeal.

Virgil faces between five and 10 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced October 26.

The rapper is still facing an attempted-murder trial stemming from the shooting, but a trial date has not been set.

can't even remember when the new album from Tha Liks was first announced, but it's been at least a couple years. Now, from the looks of it in mid 2005, the album seems to finally see the light of day this year. "Firewater" is being completed and is looking at a release in October.

To create a little buzz, the group dropped a few teasers to the streets, including a new song called "Flute Song". The title alone describes it perfectly, E-Swift put that flute all over the track! Hear it below and judge for yourself. It has been a while and it definitely feels good to have them back.

Mannie Fresh Says Bye Bye - Chubby Boy Records Started

Bild

The long time super producer of Cash Money Record's Mannie Fresh has officially left the label who brought him to the fore front of being one of the south's most creative and sought out producers. Though much speclation may come to mind with the departure of previous acts like B.G., Juvenile, Turk, which in turn made Cash Money the national threat they have become but Mannie Fresh insists there is no bad relations. He and Cash Money are still on good terms and will collaborate on some projects in the future.

Mannie Fresh insists it was just time for him to do his own thing, he has started his own imprint Chubby Boy Records and several labels are pursing the production giant for a deal to distribute his newly formed label. Also minor rumors are floating of a possible Hot Boys Reunion album, while the talks are just talks for now Mannie says dont be suprised if it happens we just hve to get all sides to agree.

TVT Records and Slip-N-Slide Records will head to court August 26 over unreleased material by Miami, Florida rapper Pitbull...

According to a report in the Miami Herald, the two labels are battling over the release of Welcome to the 305, an album that contains material Pitbull recorded before signing with TVT.

The Slip-N-Slide recordings were tracked in 2001, before the rapper signed to TVT. Slip-N-Slide claims Pitbull signed over all rights to the recordings when they granted the rapper a release in 2003 to sign with TVT.

TVT President Steven Gottlieb said that Slip-N-Slide was exploiting the investment they had made to make Pitbull a worldwide star.

''TVT has invested substantial time, effort and resources to develop Pérez [Pitbull] as an artist and to develop, market and release the M.I.A.M.I. album on a worldwide basis,'' Gottlieb said in court papers.

Pitbull's debut album M.I.A.M.I. (Money Is A Major Issue) has moved over 500,000 units and according to Slip-N-Slide owner Ted Lucas, Welcome to the 305 has already tallied over 100,000 pre-orders.

Lucas said that Pitbull has given verbal support of the older material, while Gottlieb claimed Pitbull told TVT to block the release.

“We'll fight for this because Pitbull's next real release should be a multi-platinum breakthrough,'' TVT said in a statement.

'Syrup' abuse rising in Houston
Pharmacists' trial spotlights illicit use of the cough medicine
By HARVEY RICE
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

The abuse of a codeine-fortified cough syrup is so widespread among youths here that Houston has become nationally known in the rap culture as "the City of Syrup," a local researcher says.

Prosecutors will focus on the illegal distribution of the medication in the trial of six pharmacists, beginning today in a Houston federal court.

The pharmacists are the first to be prosecuted here on accusations of illegally dispensing the highly addictive prescription cough syrup codeine with promethazine.

The syrup has been used at least once by about 30 percent of teenagers in the Houston area, says Ron Peters, a professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston.

The figures from a yet-unpublished study based on a 2004 survey show an increase from Peters' earlier study, published in 2003, which concluded that 25 percent of teenagers at six alternative schools in Harris County had used the drug at least once. Peters did not name the schools.

About 10 percent of the teens in the earlier study said they had used the drug in the past 30 days.

"Anything over 4 percent in the last 30 days is a major drug problem," Peters said.

Those figures may be too conservative, said Troy Jefferson, who heads a drug treatment center for children and adolescents at Riverside General Hospital in Houston.

Jefferson said that, out of more than 5,000 teens treated at the clinic in the past seven years, as many as 35 percent had tried prescription cough syrup more than once.

Houston Police Department spokesman Lt. Robert Manzo said the cough syrup is "extremely popular," but he declined to comment about enforcement efforts.

A U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman declined to comment because of the pending trial, in which DEA agents are expected to testify.

One of Jefferson's patients, Austin Hewitt, 16, of Humble, said he and his friends mixed the syrup with Sprite or a variation of Sprite called Remix.

"It's pretty popular," Hewitt said, adding that the cough syrup is easy to get.

Jury selection begins today in the retrial of pharmacists John David Wiley III, 40, and Anthony Dwayne Essett, 38, co-owners of I-10 East Pharmaceutical Services; Otukayode Adeleke Otufale, 44, owner of Med Stop Pharmacy at 6440 Hillcroft; Isaac Simeon Achobe, 50, owner of American Choice Pharmacy at 8449 W. Bellfort; and Chicha Kazembe Combs, 29, and Andre Dion Brown, 37, co-owners of Mason Road Pharmacy in Katy.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner ordered the retrial after a jury in May was unable to reach a verdict.

The six are accused in a 170-count indictment of illegally dispensing thousands of gallons of the cough syrup and thousands of tablets of hydrocodone, a synthetic narcotic used as a painkiller. They also are charged with conspiracy and money laundering.

Hydrocodone, more often known by the brand name Vicodin, is a widely abused prescription drug that is always in demand on the illicit market, Peters said.

But the widespread use of codeine with promethazine is widely believed to have begun in Houston, along with the popularity of a type of rap music developed by local record producer D.J. Screw, who died in 2000 of an overdose of the drug he promoted in his songs.

The producer, whose real name was Robert Earl Davis Jr., developed a slowed-down form of rap called "screwed" which extols the use of prescription cough syrup known on the street by such names as "syrup, lean, purple, syzurp, drank or purple jelly."

Now, Houston rappers such as nationally known Mike Jones lace their "screwed" music with such lyrics as, "I keep that purple stuff in my cup," a reference to mixing cough syrup with soft drinks.

Peters said screwed music and the abuse of the cough syrup has spread nationwide and into Canada. The popularity has given Houston nicknames such as "City of Syrup and City of Lean," he said.

"Now, Houston is setting the trend for the drug culture and it is being spread through rap," he said. "This is something that is a major problem throughout the United States."

Hewitt and K.D. Garner, 31, a University of Houston student who says "syrup" is widely used in his neighborhood, say the drug is most often made available by unscrupulous doctors.

Peters said users sometimes obtain a legitimate prescription by faking a serious cough.

The pharmacists' attorneys argued during the first trial that their clients didn't know they were filling fake prescriptions based on names lifted from a phone book by a doctor running a prescription mill.

Dr. Callie Hall Herpin, who pleaded guilty, testified during the first trial that another doctor showed her how to start a practice based on illegally dispensing controlled drugs.

Two office workers, who also pleaded guilty, admitted that they prepared prescriptions from computer-generated lists of phony patients that Herpin testified she signed without reading.

Legenday MC O.C. Signs with Heiro Imperium - Set to Release Album
In November

(Brooklyn, NY August 15, 2005) D.I.T.C member O.C. recently signed
with indie hip-hop conglomerate Hiero Imperium and will release his fifth
solo album entitled Smoke & Mirrors on November 1, 2005.

When people talk about MC's who are under-appreciated, O.C.'s name is
always mentioned. His history of under-promoted albums and music
industry drama has plagued him throughout his career. Despite releasing
four critically acclaimed solo releases and having tracks on a dozen
movie soundtracks, O.C. has remained largely unnoticed by the masses.
Armed with Smoke & Mirrors and backed by one of the most respected
independent hip-hop labels, Hiero Imperium, "King of the Underground"
O.C. is ready to finally get the recognition he deserves.

O.C. is excited about his new venture with Hiero. For the first time in his
career, he has been given full control over the artistry of his music. Says
O.C., "Knowing my history and work ethic Hiero said to me, 'We don't
have to babysit you, just do your thing.' Now, how many labels do you
know of that say that to their artists?" What drew O.C. to the label was
not only their mutual respect for each other but also the fact that Hiero
took control of their destiny after getting fed up with dealing with other
labels. Explains O.C., "The cats from Hiero experienced the same music
industry bulllsh*t as me. They were smart and established their own
company back in the mid 90's and have been steadily growing ever since.
I think part of the reason for their success is their egalitarian attitude.
With Hiero, I'm treated more like a partner than just an artist." O.C. is the
first East Coast artist to be affiliated with the label since it was established
in 1997.

Smoke & Mirrors is a concept album based on themes of contradiction
and hypocrisy that run rampant in the entertainment industry as seen
through O.C.'s eyes. This album is another instant classic for the
famed "King of the Underground." Smoke & Mirrors will be available for
purchase on November 1st on Hiero Imperium.
