WWS MAG: How many units have you sold in your entire career already?
Ah man, I don’t even know G. I sold a lot of independent records, and usually we average about 100,000 on each project that we drop. We do a lot of independent work and mix tapes. That was basically what built my foundation up.
Does your size ever intimidate your customers to the point where they have to buy your product?
Ahahaha, I don’t think so man. I don’t try to intimidate anyone. It’s the style. It doesn’t have anything to do with size G. Haha.
Tell me about your career. Take me back to day one, and tell me how you came to this point in your career right now.
I started out back in 1998 with Mike Watts. He was the big local DJ or whatever. I ended up getting with him and doing a mix tape with him. That s*** just spread like fire. It never stopped. Until this day, we still do the same old thing.
How were you able to hook up with Pharrell from The Neptunes and Geffen Records?
Pharrell came to the city with his group N.E.R.D. They had a little dinner thing, and they invited us. I went through. People were asking for his autographs and mine too. After that, he was like “who am I?” I did a record with one of his artists Fam Lay, and it was really successful. He liked my demo and came back through, and then I ended up signing with Interscope and Geffen. We made it happen.
Did you always plan to be a rapper even when you were younger?
I can’t say that. I definitely had a lot of love for it, but I never took it that serious; maybe for a hobby. When I was about eleven or twelve years old, my stepbrother had wrote me a rap, and I just ran around saying it and everybody thought I wrote it. I wanted to keep that up. Haha.
When and how did you click up with the Swisha House Crew?
It was back in 1998. That’s when I got with them. Mike Watts is the CEO of Swisha House. He’s the one we got with. We just made it happen. That was the same way. When he was doing his DJ thing at local teenage parties, he had invited me to his house to get on a mix tape. I got on there, and it was a wrap.
When did you decide to start your own label Boss Hogg Outlawz?
It was in 2000. I decided to step out and do my own little thing. That was my initial thing. I always wanted to have my own company. I’ve been shopping for it, stepped out on my own and made it happen.
How was it like working with The Neptunes on your album Already Platinum?
It’s live man! It’s good. They take away a lot of the pressure, even thought they are not from where I’m from. Some people feel like it should be more pressure, but having them two, it makes me feel better. I’ve got them doing my album cut. They did the majority of my record, but look at how many hits they’ve got. That is how I look at it.
Who’s featured on this debut project with Star Trak?
I’ve got a lot of cats. I’ve got T.I., Bun B, Snoop Dogg, Scarface, and Ludacris on it.
How do you feel about the rap scene in Houston, TX?
I like it man. It seems like a lot of people are doing a lot good numbers. It’s getting bigger and bigger year after year.
Who are you feeling right now? Who are you listening to during your free time?
T.I. That new 50 Cent s***, I love it. Lil Wayne is fire. Young Buck is fire. The Game’s s*** is on fire. I’m a hip-hop fan to the fullest. That is what I do every Tuesday. If something comes out, I’ll buy it. I really don’t have certain people that I mess with. I mess with all the people. I give everybody a chance basically. If I hear them on the radio and I like their song, I’m going to go buy their CD.
