In competition, timing is everything ... or so says Lil' Flip. The Houston MC says that's why he's waiting to drop his new album, I Gotta Get Mine.

"My position brings out the best in some people," said Flip. "So I let dude drop his

album and play his hand, and now I see what I got to work with."

While Flip never named the "dude" he was referring to, it's a safe bet he was talking about Southern rival T.I., whose Urban Legend was released this month. The two began beefing back in June at a radio-sponsored concert in Atlanta (see "T.I. Starts 'Filet Mignon' Beef With Lil' Flip At Birthday Bash").

Flip said he does name names on I Gotta Get Mine, due in late February or early March. "It's a couple on there that's going to have that spark," he laughed. "You know how Jay-Z came out first [with 'Takeover'], and then Nas came out [with 'Ether'] and won because he let Jay play his hand first? There you go."

For his new set, Flip worked with beatmakers like Play-N-Skillz and Mario Winans. He also manned the boards himself.

"There's no need to spend all your money on beats [from top producers] when there are new cats who are hungry to get on," he explained. "So that's what I did. When you hear it, you won't know the difference."

Flip says the album will have a host of guest artists. He plans on kicking things off with two singles — "Real Hip-Hop," featuring Ghostface and LL Cool J, and "Stay Ballin," featuring Yukmouth.

" 'Real Hip-Hop' looks at hip-hop through three generations," he said. "I grew up listening to Ghostface and the Wu-Tang, so I rhyme about that, and so on and so forth."

According to Flip, "Stay Ballin" is a remake of Tupac's "Still Ballin."

In addition to I Gotta Get Mine, Flip is also working on a new album, Death Before Dishonor, from his group Clover G's.

"This is the group that put me on and the first screwed-up clique to put out an album, so I wanted to put them on," he said. "I will be rapping on every song, so I'm going to be supporting this project to the fullest."

Solo albums from Clover G's members Will Lean, C-Note, Black Al Capone and Big Sheisty are also on the way.

After he's done putting the finishing touches on those projects, Flip plans to get back to working on his comedic biopic, "Pimpin' Ain't Easy" (see "Lil' Flip Turning His Life Into A Comedy").

"I put that on hold," he said. "I wanted to finish my album and the group album first. I wanted to get three or four years of music [done] before I started shooting the movie, so I spoke to ['Boyz n the Hood' director] John Singleton recently and we're going to sit down now and start planning the film."

If that's not enough, Flip sees himself as an entrepreneur as well. He'll launch his own liquor brand, Lucky Nites, in January. He also plans to launch two clothing lines, 5 Star General for men and Clover Girls for the ladies, and a Lil' Flip watch line later in 2005.

With his various endeavors, Flip believes his time is now.

"Hey, Jay has left," said Flip. "So someone has to do it."

Chauncey Dillon was sentenced to 30 years to life yesterday (Dec. 17) for allegedly assaulting Dip Set rapper Freaky Zeeky and murdering Zeeky’s friend during a shoot-out in Manhattan last year.

The early morning shoot-out (April 24) allegedly began when a driver rear-ended Zeeky’s Jeep Cherokee, according to trial testimony.

The drivers involved left their respective vehicles to settle the incident and the exchange became heated, Zeeky, born Ezekiel Jiles, testified.

Prosecutors allege that Dillon, 30, and two other assailants attempted to seize the rapper’s jewels.

Zeeky’s bodyguard Eric Mangrum was killed in the shooting.

A surveillance camera from a nearby building caught some of the action on tape and confirmed that Dillon took part in the melee, according to reports.

The Brooklyn resident was found guilty of felony murder in October.

Two others implicated in the shooting are currently awaiting trial and a third suspect has yet to be detained.

In an interview with Angie Martinez of Hot 97, mogul Dame Dash clarified the situation with Roc-A-Fella Records. With reservation, Dash divulged that former partner Jay-Z now owns the name Roc-A-Fella while he and partner “Biggs” Burke would continue with a new recording situation. “The Roc is in the building. It’s just not Roc-A-Fella I’m happy for Jay-Z, I’m [not owning the name] didn’t sit well with me,” Dash said. “Jay articulated our movement…we’re always going to be friends. It’s an evolution of a movement. The only problem I have is that we don’t own the name.” Dash said that he’s retained many artists like Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron, Joe Budden, Nicole Wray, State Property and other. Young Gunz, who are rappers in S.P., have expressed interest in staying with Def Jam.

In related news, Lil’ Wayne claims that he is now an artist on Def Jam under Jay-Z. In an interview, "I'm Cash Money in the heart. I'm growing out of that situation,” Wayne said. “I felt like I know I got crazy talent." Reps for Cash Money and Universal didn’t respond to requests for comment and contractual stipulations haven't been made public. On Tha Carter, Wayne’s latest, he proclaims himself “the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired."

Lil’ Kim has finally started a pair of clothing lines, Hollyhood and an unspecified upscale line. The Brooklyn-bred rapper is hoping to make the Hollyhood wear affordable being priced from $25 to $200. Via statement, Kim explained, “I've always expressed my love for fashion through my music. Hollyhood is a label for those who believe in my philosophy that there are no rules when it comes to fashion — it's about having fun and choosing to dress in a way that makes you feel good.” Hollyhood will hit stores in the fall of 2005

Group Petitions The Recording Academy to Revoke Rapper Kanye West's 10 Grammy Nominations

Members of a group calling itself The Mindset Army have drafted a petition to The Recording Academy seeking to have the popular rapper/producer's name removed from consideration in the 10 categories in which he was nominated for Grammy Awards.

Creve Coeur, MO (PRWEB) December 18, 2004 -- Concerned members of the hip-hop community have taken exception to the popular rapper/producer Kanye West's 10 Grammy nominations in light of recent developments with regard to the dubious nature of his recording processes.

In particular, a question has arisen as to whether or not Kanye West bought the song "Jesus Walks," which was nominated for both Best Rap Song and Song of the Year, from an Indianapolis-based rapper named Rhymefest. While it is true that Rhymefest is credited as a co-writer on the track, it has never been made clear the exact degree to which he was involved, and recent developments suggest that he may have written and produced the track in its entirety and sold it to West, who re-recorded it for his debut album, The College Dropout.

While this process, sometimes referred to as "ghostwriting," is fairly common in other genres of music, it has always been frowned upon in the hip-hop community. Members of the group The Mindset Army (www.byroncrawford.com) feel that it would be disrespectful to hip-hop itself if Kanye West were to win an award, especially in light of his many past statements with regard to his capabilities as an artist. They have drafted a petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/mindset/petition.html) to The Recording Academy (www.grammy.com) demanding that his name be removed from consideration in the 10 categories in which he was nominated for Grammy Awards.

"For him to pay people for rhymes, concepts, etc. is no big deal," says member chiseven (http://mystuntedgrowth.blogspot.com/), "but for him to act like he is the next G.O.A.T. of the rap game, which he does regularly, is inexcusable."

About The Mindset Army
The Mindset Army is a loose but organized collective of Internet-based hip-hop fans centered around the popular website ByronCrawford.com: The Mindset of a Champion, who have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the direction of the genre in recent years and have decided to start doing something about it.

Remy Martin of the Terror Squad was involved in a traffic accident that required that the Bronx native to spend last weekend in the hospital according to her representatives.

“She’s doing OK,” her manager Shonte Armstrong told BET.com. “She was in some pain and was taken to the hospital and then admitted for observation.”

According to co-manager Jennifer Turner, on early afternoon Friday Dec. 17, Rem was on her way to go Christmas shopping last week. As she was set to exit New York via the George Washington bridge, she was suddenly struck by a head-on by a vehicle coming from another direction.

According to Armstong, “She was released Sunday and has been on light bed rest and some medication for a minor internal ailment that resulted from the accident.”

Remy Ma’s BMW 645i convertible sustained sever damage and she is recovering at home.
