The love for rapping came from something that was planted inside the heart of the oldest brother, Bruce Lee. Bruce first started writing and rapping in 1986, at the age of 10. Upon realizing that he had a natural talent for writing and rapping he quickly turned to his brother Delano and taught him how it was done. After Bruce was convinced that “Loe” could hold his own, they began to write songs and eventually became an official group ~ “Young Gifted Blacks” better known as “YGB”. “YGB” performed at local talent shows, family functions, at various elementary and high schools, and on the street corners. Growing up in a single parent home and dealing with the struggles of life, these two young men conformed to the influences of the outside world. The street corner became a place of habitat. For it was on the street corners of Chicago that they spent most of their time rapping, selling drugs and eventually going to jail. Their lives had taken a turn for the worst. Living the street life, their world became dark! The lyrics of their songs changed from a positive message to the everyday world around them prompting them to change their name to “Dark Side Ballaz”. In 1994, Darryl Issacs, a very influential gang leader, recognized the talent of these two young men and saw them as a way out. Therefore, with the wealth that he had acquired from the street life, he decided to start P-funk Records in order to afford these young men an opportunity to record their first project. Unfortunately, in 1997, before the project was completed, Darryl Issacs was gunned down and killed. Devastated by the loss of their good friend, the duo, Dark Side Ballaz, went into a state of depression. During this time they had no motivation to continue their career in music. There is a slogan that says, “Time heals all wounds”; well it was a build up of anger that lead to the healing of these young brothers. They conquered their grief, hurt, and anger by expressing it in the lyrics of their songs. The major turning point came in 1998 when a friend convinced Loe to meet White Boy James. It was at that meeting that White Boy James also saw their potential and introduced Dark Side Ballaz to multi-platinum recording artist, Twista. In 1999 they were signed with Legit Ballin Records. Dark Side Ballaz recorded on three of Legit Ballin Records compilation CDs, “Legit Ballin”, “Street Scriptures” and “Respect The Game”. During this time, Dark Side Ballaz produced the hot single, Peace of Mind”. They have shared the stage with artist such as “Do or Die”, Crucial Conflict”, “Ludacris”, Psycho Drama, Redman, Ice Tea, Wu Tang, and comedians such as Tony Scofield, Rickey Smiley, and Simply Marvelous. However, even though they were doing what they loved, they didn’t love what they were doing. There was a void in their lives. It was a void that women couldn’t fill, street life couldn’t fill, and not even the love of money could fill it. The duo soon realized this void could only be filled with the Spirit of God. At the moment of conviction, they began to re-evaluate their lives and ultimately it led to a change in view of their deeply beloved music. In 2003, these young brothers dedicated their lives to God and once again not only did their lyrics change but so did their name. The duo changed their name to “God Side Ballaz”. Seeing the determination, commitment, and change of view in these young men, their grandfather, Deacon Odell Lee, thought it was important to encourage and provide a means for them to spread their message and to share their change of view with the world. As a result he invested in and started a record company named “Changing The View Records” where Delano and Bruce serve as President and Vice-President respectively. These young brothers, God Side Ballaz have a “growl” within them. “Growl” represents the hunger in their passion for music, rapping, and pleasing God. As when the body is hungry and it growls for food; likewise The God Side Ballaz are hungry to give the world Christ by using their gift of rapping in the stylish form of what they like to call “Salu-flow”. Salu means bless you in Spanish. It is God Side Ballaz’s sincere desire to Bless You as they flow in their rap ministry. God Side Ballaz says, “Thank You Lord” for “Peace of Mind” and giving us a “Second Chance”. “Yes” we are “Free” to express our love for God and concern for our brothers and “Sistas”. We are “Walking By Faith” proclaiming the word of God in the lyrics of our songs. We want to encourage all to “Take Yo Time” and stop “Driving Wreckless” and “Hold On”. |
