Mikel Knight is a rap and urban artist originally from Houston, Texas. His career started at the age of fifteen, when he began writing music and performing at local South Texas clubs. Throughout his teens and into his twenties, Mikel slowly climbed to the top of the heap in the South Texas hip hop scene by crafting a fresh new sound that combined strong elements of southern street rap. However, Mikel's career would almost end before it ever got off the ground. In 1995, Mikel was sentenced to 10 years in prison , but he used the time away to write and formulate what was soon to be his first album. After a reversal of evidence got him released in 1996, Mikel landed an artist development deal with Sonar Records under the name A-GEE. His first album, "Suthern Comfort-Life of A-GEE", quickly became a regional favorite among PDs at several urban stations.
Not content to sit back and wait for the world to notice, Mikel went back in the studio in 1999 with producer Matt "Mack Damon" Gallegos and Quinton "Black" Banks III of Too Short/Jive records to create his sophomore album "Strugglin 2 Hustlin". With his second album in tow, Mikel continued to impress the Texas hip hop industry and beyond with a coliseum and radio tour that included performances with Eminem, Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Dru Hill, Next, Juvenile, Hot Boyz, Trick Daddy, Trina, Genuine, South Park Mexican, Kid Frost, ESG, Lil' Troy, Big Pokey, the Screwed up Click, C-note and the Botany Boys and Knight Owl. After realizing it was time to branch out beyond the Texas rap scene, Mikel sent out feelers to several major and indie/major labels, but ended up starting his own independent label: 1203 Entertainment. Within weeks, Mikel began receiving numerous calls from A&R reps and executives from big industry dealmakers-BMG, Arista, Blackground, The Firm, Def Jam South, the Edmonds Group and more. Even with the major labels vying for his attention, Mikel began focusing on his next project, which was to become the "Mikel Knight" album.
His name change from A-GEE to Mikel Knight spawned a new burst of creative energy and added a new edge to his sound. Mikel headed to Oakland, California to work with Bay Area hit maker Steve D. and San Diego slugger DJ Fingaz (E-40, Richie Rich, D-Shot, Celly Cel, and B-Legit) before relocating to L.A. to record with Platinum and Grammy award winning producer Bobby Jones of Bone Thugs & Harmony and Mo-Thugs fame. The first song written by the two became Mikel's hit single "Peckawood" which instantly caught the industry's ear and caused controversy wherever it was heard!
With the 2001 release of his new album "The Hardest Wood Outha Forest", "Peckawood" was gaining momentum to become Mikel's first major hit single. However, fate once again intervened when the album and its single were tied up in court less than three weeks after the release! This lawsuit came about when Knight was forced to part with American Music Co., who he had signed with to handle distribution. However, Mikel continued to create buzz with "Peckawood" by producing a video which eventually landed on the airwaves of BET and MTV2. With a rapid fire lyrical flow and slick hook, the "Peckawood" video was soon causing Mikel's phone to ring off the hook again. Not ready to begin negotiating yet, he decided to do one more push before taking meetings. That's when Mikel and his crew flew to Florida for Spring Break 2002, where he placed Peckawood videos and CDs in the hands of thousands of fans in Panama city and Daytona. Pirate radio and video shows put the video in rotation immediately, and just weeks later Mikel flew back to L.A. to sign a production/radio promotion deal with Gary Marella of Universal/Motown and Rick Sackheim of Arista records. However, just when momentum was reaching its peak, a contract dispute resulted in his separation from both companies.
Not one to stay down for long, Mikel bounced back by rejoining producer Matt "Mack Damon" Gallegos to begin recording "Memoirs of a Texas Boi" in the Fall of 2003. Featuring an all-star cast of guests-including Bun B of UGK, Baby Bash, Happy Perez, DJ Kane of the Kumbia Kings, Paul Wall, Russell Lee, and a host of other talented friends-"Memoirs" was captured by a documentary crew and will be featured in "Huntsville to Hollywood", a special edition DVD to be released Spring 2005. During the making of "Memoirs," Mikel recorded and released "A-GEE Albino Gorillas" to satisfy staggering demand for the original A-GEE sound in Asian markets. Mikel's performances in Japan while on tour created a new fan base that is multiplying explosively. The release was so successful that it being scheduled for release in the U.S. this summer, and Mikel is scheduled to tour Germany this summer.
Beginning in September of 2003 Mikel also began signing artists to his 1203 Management company, starting with producer/songwriter Fyngermade (Fyngas) of Fyngermade productions from Dallas Texas. Mikel also begun expanding 1203 Entertainment Inc. by adding a film division where several scripts are being revised for production. His first major script, a comedy titled "The Plex", is scheduled to be in production in early 2006. Mikel's company, 1203 Entertainment, has become a successful independent record distributor at the same time, branching out from his own success to help bring other artists and indepentent labels to emerging foreign markets.
Now free from any label attachments, Mikel has set out to reinvent himself for his next major label debut due out fall 2005. With a video in the can for the first smash single "Texas Bad Boi", Mikel and 1203 Entertainment are ready to take the world by storm. Armed with exclusive agreements with hot young producers like Fyngermade Productions, Mikel is poised to create the new Texas Bad Boi era.
