Three 6 Mafia Go 'Hollyhood,' Ready New Album
The song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," from the movie soundtrack "Hustle & Flow," may have won the best original song Oscar last year, but Three 6 Mafia's Juicy J and DJ Paul guarantee the upcoming "Last 2 Walk," due in June, is "our best album yet..."
"We got Lyfe Jennings, Paul Wall, 8Ball & MJG, Akon, the Game, Lil' Jon and Lil' Wayne," DJ Paul tells Billboard.com. "It's hot as hell!"
Other features on the album include Lil' Keke, Crime Mob's Diamond and Princess, and long-time Three 6 Mafia affiliate Project Pat. The first single, "Doe Boy Fresh," is steadily climbing the Pop 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. As for the second single, DJ Paul says, "We haven't decided yet, but we have like 50 tracks to choose from."
Production on the album was kept in-house, with the exception of a couple of Akon-produced tracks. "We wanted Akon to do some production on there 'cause we're fans of his," says Juicy J.
"Last 2 Walk" was originally set to hit stores in April, but was pushed to a summer release to coincide with the finale of Three 6 Mafia's reality series, "Adventures in Hollyhood," which premieres Thursday (April 5) on MTV. "You see us in meetings, recording, trying to come up with songs, trying to do movie deals, even trying to pick up women," says DJ Paul. "Our lives are like a circus," adds Juicy J. "You wouldn't believe the crap we go through everyday."
Aside from their own projects, Juicy J and DJ Paul have contributed to recent projects from Lil' Flip and Justin Timberlake. "[Justin] used to always tell us he grew up on our music," says DJ Paul of teaming up with the fellow Memphis native. "It was that M-town love; it was time for that to happen." Three 6 Mafia will be back in their hometown next month to perform at the Beale Street Music Festival.
