Throughout Three 6 Mafia’s long career they have accomplished: three platinum albums, a reality show, and their biggest accomplishment yet, an Academy Award. Now down to the final two members of Three 6 Mafia, DJ Paul and Juicy J take time to talk to WordofSouth.com about life in Hollyhood, their new album, and the future of Hypnotized Mindz.
WordofSouth.com: What is Adventures in Hollyhood going to be all about?
DJ Paul: It follows Three 6 Mafia after we won the Oscar and how we come to LA to capitalize and make some money.
Juicy J: In between, it’s showing us in the studio, writing songs for the new album, showing how we work, and it’s just Three 6 Mafia everyday life. It’s a comedy, but it’s our everyday life. It got its ups and downs and everything is not glamour and glit, it’s a working process trying to get to the point that you’re trying to get. To get to that next place you got to cross some stop signs, stop at the stop signs, punch the gas, and got to do things to get there.
WordofSouth.com: How was it making the adjustment to moving to Cali?
DJ Paul: It’s very different out here man, its expensive man, it’s very, very, very expensive, but it’s real cool, so it’s cool. We done been out here a lot anyway, so we know where all the good spots at to get the goods, plus ya know it’s cheaper out here.
WordofSouth.com: How did you feel about having cameras around you pretty much all of the time?
DJ Paul: It was hard, but you see we were the executive producers on the show so we got say so in stuff too. They wasn’t around us 24 hours like the fedz and all that. We worked from 9 in the morning to like 12 at night.
WordofSouth.com: Was anything cut from the show that you wished would have made it to the final cut?
DJ Paul: We still editing.
Juicy J: There a lot of stuff that you can’t show. There are certain things that go on behind closed doors that you can show on TV, but you gotta remember that it’s TV, so you can show some stuff, but some things just don’t look so well on TV. You can’t show everything, you can show enough, but you can’t show everything, because it’s TV.
DJ Paul: A lot of stuff had to be edited. You can’t just show everything that Three 6 Mafia do because you got kids watching.
WordofSouth.com: What do you think the fans reaction to the show will be?
Juicy J: I think they will think its funny and will be laughing. They will be like Three 6 Mafia are some crazy wild guys.
DJ Paul: They will love the show; it’s the Sanford & Son of today.
Juicy J: If you listen to our records man, it’s just like our records, it’s nothing different. If you meet us, or seen us on TV, see our reactions, see how we act in videos, it’s just like that.
WordofSouth.com: Do you guys seeing yourself doing another season of this if MTV approached you?
DJ Paul: Hell yeah, if the ratings are good.
Juicy J: Yeah man, why not?
WordofSouth.com: What was it like performing in front of old white ladies on the Ellen show?
Juicy J: The Ellen show was fun man, it was real fun.
DJ Paul: I’d do it again man anytime.
WordofSouth.com: When the camera wasn’t rolling how did everyone react towards you?
Juicy J: They loved us man, they showed us a lot of love. We ran into Ellen at a Justin Timberlake concert and she was like “hey, appreciate ya!”, so she’s a real sweet person. She gave us robes and gave us some little gifts and showed us some extra love.
WordofSouth.com: Since winning an Oscar, do you feel that your music might be heading towards a different direction?
Juicy J: Anytime you win an Oscar your career is always gonna hit a boost and we are thankful for it. I think the music is still the same and we still doing the same thing. We are getting a lot more work, but it’s like people on the mainstream are like Three 6 Mafia’s a brand new group, so everyone is interested now as far making tracks for the artist’s albums and stuff. It’s a good thing though, ain’t no pressure because we always stay busy, and stay working. It’s not like we get up in the morning, drink a cocktail, and then go back to sleep. You know we get up in the morning, drink a cocktail, and go to the studio you know what I’m saying?
WordofSouth.com: Let’s talk about the album “Last 2 Walk” now. The first single is going to be “Dope Boy Fresh” with Chamillionaire. How did that collaboration come about?
DJ Paul: We been knowing Chamillionaire for a while man, that’s our down south homie right there. We been knowing him for a minute and it was just time for us to do something together and everything happens for a reason.
WordofSouth.com: You are shooting the video for “Dope Boy Fresh” this week, what will be the concept for the video?
DJ Paul: It’s about how people can go into this booth and become DJ Paul & Juicy J. Old people or whatever will go in the booth and when they come out will look like us, but when they look in the mirror it will reflect them and us, but when everyone else see them it’s like they see their self, but be dressed like us. It gives people the chance to live the life of an Academy Award winner.
WordofSouth.com: Since video shoots can be long and drawn out, what does Three 6 Mafia do during so much down time to stay from being bored?
Juicy J: Life is fun man, everyday you wake up, and breathe fresh air, FUN!
DJ Paul: You gotta have fun man; you can’t be sittin’ over in the corner getting your nails done and getting powder spattered on your face.
Juicy J: Get a beer, drink a cocktail, talk to a woman or something, and get some new friends, FRIENDS!
WordofSouth.com: Who do you have featured on the album?
DJ Paul: So far we got Paul Wall, Lil Keke, Lyfe Jennings, and some old school rappers from Memphis from back in the day that we showed some love to that we always wanted to work with.
WordofSouth.com: Being the last two members of Three 6 Mafia, did you two take a different approach to recording the album?
Juicy J: We always take our music and albums seriously every time.
DJ Paul: We do the same thing man; if it ain’t broke we ain’t trying to fix it. We keep the same formula rolling and the same little recipe.
WordofSouth.com: Now with Project Pat’s album not receiving the proper promotion, does this at all worry you guys regarding your next album?
Juicy J: Anytime you dealing with a major label you’re always going to be worried.
DJ Paul: That’s how it goes sometimes.
Juicy J: It’s like they got your career in their hands and they can make you or break you, but you just got to have the faith and stay on they ass. If it’s good music, it needs to be pushed. If its not good music then you know, you gotta get back in the studio and keep working.
DJ Paul: Three 6 Mafia never really received a lot of TV and a lot promotions until we won the Oscar, but the hood gonna pick it up anyway. Even if we don’t sell platinum or whatever we still be selling in the hood. The hood still picking up Project Pat album, they just didn’t know that it was out there, but once they do they go to the stores and get it. We gone promote it on the new Three 6 Mafia album as well, but the hood still got it by way of bootleggers walking in the barbershop and selling.
Juicy J: Project Pat finna be off of Sony his distribution deal is up over there, so we gonna probably take him somewhere else or do the independent thing. You know you make more money independent. You sell 2-300, 000 copies then you are sitting on some money. Anybody in the independent game knows the independent game is serious. Don’t mess around and go gold if you gotta independent album out. You ain’t close to Bill Gates, but you are standing by the door, not walking, but standing. To be honest with you we working on another Project Pat album and it be ready to come out this summer.
WordofSouth.com: When I interviewed Project Pat he said reasoning behind the other members of HCP not being on the album was label politics with Sony; is that the reason?
DJ Paul: Pat hadn’t made an album in years and we really wanted the audience to focus on Pat and that’s why we didn’t put a lot of people on the album. We just kept the focus on him.
Juicy J: He’d been in jail for so long; he had a lot to say, so the album was pretty much him.
WordofSouth.com: What is the Hypnotized Mindz roster looking like right now and what can we expect from the label in the future?
Juicy J: We got Lil Wyte, Project Pat, who else we got Paul?
DJ Paul: We got Frayser Boy and Chrome.
Juicy J: Those are the artists that we are working with right now.
DJ Paul: We are in the process of looking for an R&B girl.
Juicy J: We are still interested in signing new artists, but as far as right now those are the artists signed and what we are working on right now. We are always keeping our ears open to rap acts, R&B acts, or whatever.
WordofSouth.com: Is Lord Infamous still a part of the label?
DJ Paul: Yeah Infamous still with us, but him going through some life things right now.
WordofSouth.com: Will he be on the album?
DJ Paul: Oh, nah he ain’t on the new album.
WordofSouth.com: What’s the updates on Choices 3 and “Streets Of Memphis”?
Juicy J: We been busy as hell right now man, but we are still working on the scripts and making sure the scripts are tight. We are still releasing those movies. We never say we are gonna do something and it never happens, we still gonna release those movies. It’s still in the process.
WordofSouth.com: What artists are you looking forward to working with in the future that you haven’t worked with yet? Any non-southern artists?
DJ Paul: Man whoever man, we real open to work with anybody.
Juicy J: We just work man.
DJ Paul: One thing I’d like to work with is Dr. Dre because Dr. Dre and NWA was the sound for Gangsta rap and they opened the doors for a lot of people, so I’d like to do a song with Dre before it’s all over with.
WordofSouth.com: Anything else before we wrap this up?
DJ Paul: Just look out for the new Three 6 Mafia album “Last 2 Walk” in April and look out for the new Three 6 Mafia reality show “Adventures in Hollyhood” March 14th. Check out the web site
