DJ Screw: The Untold Story CD/DVD News
DJ Screw: The Untold Story, the new CD/DVD combo featuring Houston’s own hip-hop pioneer DJ Screw, is set to drop July 18th. Containing never-before seen footage of the one man who gave Houston its sound identity, the DVD tells the story of Robert Davis (DJ Screw) before the fame, from the people who were there with him. The bonus CD, titled The Screwed Up Click: Making History, has tracks featuring Lil Flip, Z-RO, Hawk, Lil Keke, Big Moe, Big Pokey, ESG, C-Note and Bun B of UGK, just to name a few...
As one who broke new ground in the world of hip-hop, DJ Screw was the originator of “Screwed and Chopped” music, a technique of slowing the music’s pace down to an obscure rate to get a real feel for the Houston streets. With the Screwed Up Click, or S.U.C., Screw began a mix-tape movement that would later take the industry by storm.
Although DJ Screw is not around today to witness his legacy, many rappers continue to use the “Screwed and Chopped” music in their own works. Rappers such as Mike Jones, Paul Wall, UGK, Slim Thug and Chamillionaire view Scew as their main influence. From “platinum in the streets” to “platinum in the charts,” DJ Screw’s legacy went from the streets of Houston to mainstream. The embracing of his sound, and how he is responsible for the launching of many careers, makes him the man behind of the biggest movements in hip-hop.
To pay tribute to DJ Screw, a concert and a car show, dubbed DJ Screwfest, will be held July 22, 2006 at the Pasadena Fairgrounds in Pasadena, TX. Some of the names scheduled to perform at the festival include Mannie Fresh, The S.U.C., Bun B and Pimp C of UGK, with more being added everyday. DJ Screw: The Untold Story CD/DVD will also be available to purchase at the event. For more information on DJ Screwfest, visit
