Lil’ Tex – I Got Next Mixtape

Much the same as my last review (of Ryno’s “They Call Me ‘No”), Lil’ Tex out of Dallas is another local artist that I unfortunately have not taken the time to check out. I was familiar with him and his label, Wired Up Entertainment, and had met his CEO, Mason LaDue, but had never heard any of Tex’s material.

This all changed last night when I checked out the free download of Lil’ Tex’s “I Got Next” mixtape on Wired Up Ent.’s Myspace page. Mixed by Wired Up’s own DJ Lonestar, “I Got Next” is an adventure in the style of Texas rap that most of us in the state have come to love. Although it is the standard all flows tape, albeit with four original tracks in the mix, Tex manages to keep you listening with an excellent choice of beats and a very smooth flow.

From the first track, in which Lil’ Tex proclaims, “Matter fact, this ain’t no motherfuckin’ mixtape, this a sick tape”, his ability to tear through beats just as well as the original artist is apparent. With a natural sounding and confident flow on tracks such as “Front And Back” and “Truth In Da Booth”, Tex comes off as a polished veteran spitting effortlessly. He also shows that he is capable of making surprisingly nice hooks on both “My Hood” and “D-Town Shit”, among other tracks.
An interesting fact about Lil’ Tex that should be pointed out is that he uses no pen or pad when he is in the studio. As he stated in a recent interview, he simply listens to a beat, composes lyrics in his head, and then goes into the booth. His raps, while not the most complex out there, are far from simple A-B-C lines, and his talent for rhyming is obvious throughout the mixtape.
One of the standout tracks in regards to this is “Dro & Lean”, in which Tex replicates Young Dro’s rhyme scheme from the hit “Shoulder Lean”. This doesn’t come off as a biting of Dro’s style, though, as Tex makes it sound just as if it were his own song.
Another one of the more impressive tracks on “I Got Next” is “I’m Down”, which showcases Tex’s incredibly fluid flow. He manages to move across the track as smooth as butter while not missing a beat, and it is a true indicator of his potential as an artist.
Despite the fact that this is primarily an all flows mixtape, the four original tracks included should not be overlooked. By far the best is the track “Swang Left Swang Right”, which from first listen could easily become a radio or club hit. This is not to take away from the other originals though, as they all benefit from great production and catchy hooks, with one even utilizing a Fat Pat sample from Lil’ Troy’s legendary Houston anthem “Wanna Be A Baller”. The lone feature on the mixtape occurs on the original “Rush ‘Em”, a Gator Main track which Lil’ Tex is featured on.

In the end, “I Got Next” comes out as a great mixtape. Although there are a few tracks that you may want to skip over, the majority of the tape will keep you entertained while awaiting the next project from this up-and-coming Dallas talent.

"We Know You Wan't That" hab ich mir noch nicht angehört, hab ich auch nicht vor. "On The Grind" hab ich mir schon angehört und find es nicht wirklich gut. Tum Tum geht mir mit der Zeit etwas auf den Geist und die Songs von Tuck, die allerdings alle cool sind, waren ja schon so gut wie alle bekannt.
