Took me a while to type all this out from his letter I received today, but here ya go, for the fans, from Dat Boy Grace. Your questions and then some answered.
Q: Can you tell us your favorite Screw House memory?
Grace: Man my favorite Screw house memory has to be the first time I saw & heard Screw sell a dub strictly cuz I wuz on it! It was crazy, I believe it was me, Poppy (M. 3-4 Action), Los, Shorty Macc, and a couple more of the homies chillin’ wit Screw at the house. He had just opened the gate and it wuz a line from his side door to the street. We wuz drankin’, chillin’, watchin’ Screw’s back while he did his thang.
We were all close enough to hear him ask people which tape they wanted and I’ll never forget this group of eses came up and wuz like, “Man Screw, we want something new with Dat Boy Grace on it!” Screw started smiling and wuz like “ya’ll cut for G-R-A-C-E,” and they wuz like “hell yeah Grace go hard, he be goin’ off.” By this time everybody listening, we could hear them, but they can’t see us and we can’t see them. So, Screw opens the door wide and says “Shit, here go Grace right here!” Awww man, they went crazy telling me how they cutted for me and shit. That’s when I realized I wuz pretty good, of all the people (Pat, Keke, Pokey, ESG, etc) they asked for me. I wuz so crunk and at that moment I decided to put out a solo album. A lot of people don’t know it but I didn’t start rapping til after Screw and I met. I wuz the hustler, when niggas was rappin’, I was grinding on some manager type of shit.
Q: Who introduced you to Screw?
Grace: Big Jut was my barber back in the day, he wuz also Screw’s personal barber as well. Shit on my C-Day I paid extra got Jut to make a house call to my spot. After he cut my hair, I had drank, dro, pills, dip everything a nigga wanted, so Jut wuz like, “man, what can I get a nigga that’s got everything?” We laughed and then I wuz like it would be real if you could call Screw and see if we can do a dub. He did, we showed up, I met Screw, we hit it off, off top and the rest is history!
Q: What’s one conversation you and Screw had you distinctly remember?
Grace: A few days before Screw passed, me and a couple of of my potnas (Bear & Menafee) put together a show. Everyone from Straight Profit wuz there it wuz like a Southwest party. Screw, Botany Boyz and Wreckshop Records were all VIPs at the show. After the show, Screw followed me out to my property, 10 acres of land me, my father and my brother had just bought. We watched the sun come up, sat outside and talked. He told me how much he liked my album and he felt Straight Profit wasn’t handling they bus. with it. He said he wuz goin’ to screw the album, re-drop it, start the Screwed Up Ent. label and put my next album out himself. I felt like Pac after he got out and signed with Death Row. Then my nigga passed and shit hasn’t been the same since.
Q: Could there ever be a Z-Ro/Grace album if both of you were free at the same time?
Grace: Hell yeah, Ro my dude, we’ve been tight since day one. I’m the one that brought Ro & Wood to Straight Profit and to Screw, them my niggas. Me and Ro were working on an album, “Clue 52” before I got locked up. We will definitely work together once I come home! Real Talk.
Q: What was your favorite Screw Tape you were featured on?
Grace: Every dub I wuz on wuz an event and special in its own way. I felt like being on top of the world, to be locked up in the mix with Screw You, getting throwed, goin hard. If I had to pick one it would be “Killuminati.”
Q: Do you know the original name of the Screw Tape that fans have labeled Grace C-Day?
Grace: That’s gotta be Fuck the World or Another Day Another Dub. Both are classics and are c-day dubs.
Q: Why did you and Wood fall out, and how do you feel about working with Papa Josh and GNT who also works with Wood?
Grace: Man to be honest, there’s a lot of deep, deep feelings involved. Wood wuz always like another lil’ bro of mine. Me, him and Los did everything together, from growing up, from hustling to hooping. You could say Wood lived with us at my folks’ house all through high school. Man, that wuz my ace, it hurts to even write about it (for real, for real). Why we fell out is personal, I mean real deep and personal, but most importantly, it’s irrelevant, because I forgive my nigga, even though there’s some things that need to be discussed. Like I said, Wood was never a friend, he was always thought of as a brother, I love that nigga, we just need to talk. As far as Papa Josh and GNT goes I look at that situation as a blessing from God. Everything happens for a reason, destiny can’t be denied feel me!
Q: How did you hear about HAWK’s passing? Speak on him a little if you will.
Grace: H-A-dud wuz a real dude. A leader, a soldier, somebody everyone respected and looked up to. A family man, who put us all under his wings and guided the way after we lost Pat and Screw. The General, the one person no one could deny will always be loved and missed. I found out Hawk passed away while on lock, I had just left the rec yard when one of my Locs stopped me and told me he had called back home in Texas and wuz told cuz had passed on. Man, I wuz like “naw, whoever said that is a motha-fuckin liar, ain’t no way H-A got shot hell naw!” I came in, called my brotha and father and my girl and they all said it wuz true. Of all the times I’ve been on lock I’ve never had to deal with death until now. I’ve lost my grandfather as well as my big Homey and that shit hurts! Real Talk.
Q: What do you think of Lil Keke signing to Swishahouse?
Grace: In this business we’re in it’s all about opportunity, marketing strategies and mashing. I love Keke, respect him and will always be down with him. I feel like he made a business decision and I wish him the best. Hopefully, he can put it down til I get down, create an avenue for the rest of the fam and allow us to fulfill Ghetto Dreams and Screw the whole world for real!
Q: Will the Grey Tape Soldier mixtape drop?
Grace: YES, YES, YES, the highly anticipated mixtpae of the year will drop in 07 and will be very much worth the wait. Featuring Z-Ro, Big Hawk, Mike D, Lil Keke, Lo$, Wil-Lean, Big Moe, Big Pokey and 3-2. I’ve been on at least 25 different Screwtapes, been paying dues since ’94, way before the deals, the dats and the reels. A Day One Original Screwed Up Clicc member, and “Grey Tape Soldier” is a must for any true Screwhead. Q: Will the Underground Funk series continue once you are released?
Grace: Without a doubt. Underground Funk will continue. Mixtapes are the shit, it’s what I love to do and will do until I pass them on to my sons!
Q: Are you going to get on another Big Baby mix?
Grace: Big Baby is the closest thing we could ever get next to Screw. I watched Screw teach Big Baby everything he knows. He’s a day one soldier and I will forever get down with him straight up!
