Lil Flip Joins Asylum, Discusses Sony Leak Monday, August 7, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Lil FlipLil Flip has inked a deal with Asylum/Warner Music Group after breaking ties with his former label, Columbia/Sony, in June.
Flip, born Wesley Weston, said things began falling apart at Sony after the release of his 2004 album, U Gotta Feel Me – which featured the popular single “Game Over.”
Although the LP is certified platinum, the Houston rapper claimed that with the proper promotion it could have done better.
“When I signed to Sony I already made a name for myself because I sold over 150,000 units on my own without anyone’s help,” Flip said.
“Everybody wanted to sign me and I had fans. With that type of ammunition, Sony was able to take me to platinum with barely any promotion.”
“I had two videos and went over platinum,” Flip explained. “Most rappers need three to four videos to go platinum. Imagine if someone was really behind me. At this point in my career, I can’t settle for part of a promotional campaign, and Sony would not give me 100%.”
To make matters worse, shortly after Lil Flip left the label his forthcoming album, I Need Mine, was leaked.
“All I know is my copy is watermarked,” he said. “I didn’t leak it and the only other people that have it is Sony.”
“The point of taking the masters was so we could release the album exactly how it was. Now we have to regroup.”
Sony has not commented on the situation.
On Asylum, Lil Flip will join fellow Houston artists Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and UGK’s Pimp C.
