"The Pyre" is a collaboration between Tim Holland & Ravi Zupa. It is a seventy-two page illustrated epic poem with an accompanying full length "audiobook/album." Holland & Zupa evoke the confusion, violence, hope, and voice of twelve thousand years spent digging in the mud.


Ravi Zupa is Denver's rare resident poet-painter, sculptor, film artist, activist & intellectual. Through his refusal to commit to one discipline Ravi has built himself a broad tool box to draw from. Though his main focus and skill resides in drawing and painting, he is best known for his complex and stylistically varied music video work for several international bands including Sole, Why?, Themselves and Genghis Tron.


Indie hip-hop pioneer Tim Holland, founder and ex member of anticon, is the embodiment of DIY anti-establishment experimental hip-hop. Over the course of fifteen years he has released 15+ albums under the monickers of sole, sole & the skyrider band, & mansbestfriend. His radical approach to hip-hop songwriting has earned him countless accolades and a worldwide cult following.


The visual inspirations for "The Pyre" come from the persuasive art of propaganda as it appears throughout history and in all geographical areas. It is a series of original drawings by Zupa that give added dimension to the text using familiar styles from the German Renaissance, Japanese Block art, Religious Iconography from Europe, Asia and pre-Columbian South America, & 20th century revolutionary propaganda.


Holland's far reaching story of civilization is told in the language of ancient myth. Drawing on influences as diverse as Keats, Villon, Debord, Byron & The Epic of Gilgamesh. The poem touches on everything from work, time, human interaction, invention, "progress," & ethics. The result is a melting pot of past/present/future motifs, expressing the timeless theme; "the only craft we have perfected is the ungentle one."


The album is a cross between an audiobook, a herzog soundtrack, & an instrumental album. Featuring 20-plus songs recorded using analog 8-track & Computer. Continuing in the vein of the critically acclaimed mansbestfriend series, the would-be instrumental sections merge with the narrative and draw the listener into the beautiful and chaotic world that is "The Pyre."

this is the best live recording of us i've heard of us. featuring tracks from all 3 sole and skyrider records, its a nice little blend w/ more aggressive performances than found on the recordings. cd is limited and when they are gone they are gone.

The song itself is about the history of America's long decline,
beginning with the exploitation of the natives, slavery and the post
world war 2 american dominance over the globe. Once the world was
sucked dry, the entire system caved in on itself. We have been living
on borrowed time since day one, with nothing left to plunder all we
can do now is make radical changes or suffer the consequences.
Ben Bernanke, the head of the Federal Reserve has overseen many of the
disastrous policies that have lead to the destruction of the middle
class and american labor. The video depicts Ben Bernanke in the near
future as a homeless drunk living in a shanty, or possibly an Occupied
space in the United States.

A 23 track mixtape of songs about economic issues covering 10 years of
my career. Featuring tracks with, Sollillaquists of Sound, Lil B,
Astronautalis, Pictureplane, Odd Nosdam, B. Dolan, Mac Lethal, Buddy
Peace, Time, Jared Paul, and the pedestrian. Although the movement has
already been dubbed “The American Autumn,” its “The Fall” that
I’ve been documenting. Despite what “economists, lobbyists, and
experts” have been telling us over the past 20 years the project of
“American empire” could only end like all other empires in
history… in Collapse.

Like the Folk aesthetic of protest songs that have inspired this
work, this music serves as discourse, diatribe & documentation. For
the first time in history, we have a global civilization… Corn in
the Midwest being used for Ethanol effects the price of tortillas in
Bolivia… A border dispute in the Middle East can bring down the
World Trade Center… A mortgage bubble bursting in Phoenix can bring
down the economy of Greece… And this is only the beginning.

For the first time in my life I’m watching a generation which has
largely been written off as “lost” stand up and demand to have its
best interests represented in the halls of the capitol. Who knew that
our project of spreading democracy in the middle east would have
thereverse colonizing effect? The actions in Egypt, Tunisia, & Libya
serve as lessons to us all, hopefully we won’t have to call in China
for air support.

I've been talking this shit for a decade. I felt it would be fitting
to compile all the songs I made that touch on economic issues and
throw em together for a free download. Here they are.
