Celebration of Life & the Black Mafia in New York City

It’s been a minute since the site has been updated, simply because “all is quiet on the WESTern front.” You know it’s hard to form like Voltron when all the lions are not together, but the folks here at ABVDLAW.COM and WestWorld Records want to thank everyone for checking in from time to time, your dedication is what keeps ATL moving within the belly of Uncle Sam or on the concrete jungles of Los Angeles, California and the world.
It’s August and the staff at ABVDLAW.COM and WestWorld Records would like to say Happy Birthday to our founder and CEO Big Hutch. We all wish you were on the outside with us, celebrating, but we want to let you know to keep representing Above The Law, L.A., Hip-Hop, and the Hutchinson clan, and we will rep for you out here, until your feet hits this concrete again kinfolk.
The recent issue of F.E.D.S. Magazine (Vol. 4 Issue 17) dedicated a section of their publication to the founding organization of Hip-Hop culture, The Universal Zulu Nation. In it, Zulu King Tawfiyq was asked by F.E.D.S. “Why did Ice Cube & other artists turn to the U.Z.N. for security? Tawfiyq stated “When Ice Cube left N.W.A., it was ZULU that embraced him before anyone else, especially here in the East Coast. When Cube was having beef with N.W.A. and he came to N.Y. for the New Music Seminar at the Marriott, it was Zulu who came to his aide when he was getting flipped on by Above The Law, which was under N.W.A. Brother B.O., myself, and a few others got right in there and helped Cube out. His former mates were violating him, even with his mother & sister present. So we put a stop to that, cuz it was getting crazy right there in the hotel….”
We asked Damon X, General Manager of WestWorld Records, who was present at the Seminar and is a member of the Zulu Nation, what happened and he stated to ABVDLAW.COM “Well, there was a scuffle between ATL and the Lench Mob. I later found out some of Cube’s entourage (The Lench Mob) was sellin’ wolf tickets by confronting’ ATL and telling’ them what they were going to do to them and ATL had to defend themselves and started whoopin’ ass. Cube got socked. The God King Sun got socked the fuck out and I can’t remember who else, but after the end of the scuffle, the only people left standing were Above The Law. The problem resulted from groupie niggas running their mouth instead of letting the brothers handle their differences by themselves, which I think would of lead to a more peaceful understanding. ATL didn’t violate anyone, but they had to stand on their square and protect themselves. Have you noticed that Cube never went and dissed ATL after that incident? We all know that Cube can lyrically get in somebody’s ass, but he and everyone else knows Hutch, KM.G, and K-OSS are the wrong brothers to fuck with (and can rep in front and behind the mic) when you’re trying to bring that studio shit to some real G’s and that was proven right in the heart of Times Square. What is ironic is that Tom Silverman, who I worked for many years at Tommy Boy Records, pretty much ran the Seminar back in the day and banned ATL from all future Seminar conferences. Also, Mr. Silverman later signed ATL to his label in 1996 and had a good relationship until we all left the label three years later. I love Zulu, but the brother got his facts a little mixed up. In fact, instead of trying to save Cube, he should of got the actual facts and tried to mediate the whole thing. To this day, ATL represents the warrior spirit of Shaka Zulu and they should of been members of Amazulu.”
ABVDLAW.COM is feeling the throwback era and wanted to pass that old school nostalgia on to the ATL fans, so be sure to check out the Media portal scroll down to the video section and take a Ruthless trip to THE CREATION OF G-FUNK (no, it wasn’t Dre, Warren, or anyone else who thinks they brought this sound to Hip-Hop). Also, check out the interview BET News did back when ATL were Death Row inmates. Damn, those were the days. Lastly, please keep Hutch and K-OSS in your prayers and we dedicate this month’s update to Anitta and the kids. Keep reppin’ and being the strong Black woman you are. Your children gather their strength from you. In the immortal words of 2Pac, “Keep Your Head Up (things gonna get easier).”

There is another discussion currently going on http://abvdlaw.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=126about the validity of ATL's account about the creation of G Funk and what really went down. Is Dr. Dre's The Chronic a rip-off of Black Mafia Life or vice-versa? Well here's an account of an interview the group had several years ago with California's own The Bomb. A much shorter version later appeared in the Source Magazine. Hopefully, we will get the Media/Press section crackin' soon and have all the interviews posted.
Hopefully this will satisfy/silence all the naysayers and disbelievers and if it doesn't well nothing ATL says will make you a believer, but it's common fact ABOVE THE LAW INSPIRED THE WESTCOAST, DR. DRE, SNOOP, WARREN G, AND A WHOLE HOST OF OTHERS.

MEMPHIS- Millions of R&B and Motown fans are mourning the loss of Willie Hutch. The soul singer and songwriter died last night at his home in Dallas, Texas. The cause of death has not yet been released. Hutch was 60-years old.

He was born Willie McKinley Hutchinson in 1946 in Los Angeles, but was reared in Dallas, where he released his first debut solo single, "Love Has Put Me Down." Hutch put out his first album in 1964 and went on to produce and write a number of albums.

In 1970, record producer Hal Davis asked Hutch to help finish off a song he desperately needed completed for the Jackson 5. That song was "I'll Be There." The Jackson 5 recorded Hutch's version the next day, and it eventually became one of the group's early hits. It also led to Motown head Berry Gordy hiring Hutch as a songwriter-producer for other Motown artists on a regular basis.

News Channel 3 spoke to Hutch's band leader shortly after the news of his death broke overnight. Luke Weathers remembers Hutch as a musical genius and exceptional songwriter.

Hutch also wrote the entire album for the 70's movie "Foxy Brown", and produced albums for Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson. He even wrote a song for the soundtrack to the movie "Hustle and Flow".

Hutch's back-up band for the last two years, "7 Down" lives in Memphis.

News Channel 3 also spoke to Willie Hutch's manager, Anthony Voyce, early this morning by phone. "I've never met a more generous and caring person to have been around. To have a man to have been around like that, is amazing. We're going to miss him".

Family and friends are not saying exactly how Willie Hutch died late last night.

b.Willie McKinley Hutchinson, 1946, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

Hutch grew up in Dallas where he sang with The Ambassadors.

A keen and ambitious singer / songwriter as a teenager, Willie first came to the attention of the music business in 1964 when his debut single 'Love Has Put Me Down' was released by the Soul City Records label.

His songs attracted the attention of The Fifth Dimension who recorded a number of them.

Willie himself recorded with Venture prior to two albums in the early 70's with RCA (including 'Let's Try It Over').

In 1970, he received a phone call from producer Hal Davis who urgently needed a song written to a backing track he had entitled 'I'll Be There'.

By 8 am the next morning, The Jackson 5 were in the studio recording it.

Willie later co-arranged vocals on 'Got To Be There' and 'Never Can Say Goodbye' for the group, impressing Berry Gordy who employed him at Motown on a more permanent basis.

Willie produced the first Smokey Robinson album without The Miracles, and when Sisters Love had a cameo role in 'The Mack', the group's manager suggested Willie record the soundtrack.

The result was 'The Mack', including 'Brother's Gonna Work It Out' and 'Slick', Willie's first album for Motown in 1973. (Willie also worked with Sisters Love on 'Mr Fix-it Man'.)

His other albums at the label included 'The Mark Of The Beast' (1975); 'Concert In Blues' (1976), including 'Party Down'; 'Color Her Sunshine' (1976), including 'I Like Everything About You', 'Havin' A House Party' and 'Fully Exposed' before he joined the Whitfield label for two albums, 'In Tune (1978), including 'Easy Does It', and 'Midnight Dancer'.

In 1982, he wrote 'Keep The Fire Burning' for Gwen McCrae and returned to Motown for three collaborations with Berry Gordy.

The first was a duet for The Four Tops and Aretha Franklin 'What Have We Got To Lose' (1983), the second a song / production for Sammy Davis Jnr, 'Hello Detroit' (1984), and the third a soundtrack album for Berry's film 'The Last Dragon' (1985).

This soundtrack included a Willie Hutch single 'The Glow'.

During this period at Motown he wrote/produced 'Sexy Ways' for The Four Tops and released two albums, 'In And Out' (1985) and 'Making A Game Of Love' (1985), including 'Keep On Jammin'.

Willie has also written and / or produced for The Miracles, The Main Ingredient ('California My Way'), Junior Walker, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, among others.

Willie released two albums in the Nineties. 'From The Heart' and 'The Mack Is Back'. Both sets were well received.
