January 1, 2004
Here we are starting Third Earth Music Vol 3.0. Hope everyone had a Happy New Year, and aren't too hung over. I'm very excited about the things that we have in store for the new year, and I hope you guys are excited as well. I know due to our president's genius, our economy sucks, and it sucks for all of us not in the higher tax bracket, and I know very well how important every dollar you have is. So I'd like to first say thank you for spending some of it on us, whether coming to see a show, or buying an album, cause that's money for rent. And we're gonna continue to put out product so you feel like you aren't wasting your money.
The first thing to look out for in 2004 is gonna be the launch of our online store. We'll send out an email once it's ready, but there you will be able to get everything we've released, some clothing, and some exclusive product that we will keep refreshing as the year goes on, and best of all the money is going straight to us, so if you are used to buying records online, we ask that you start using our store.
Here's what to expect in 2004... (In alphabetical order)
Black Panther (NYC)
This is one of those records that seems to get overlooked by many, and categorized as just another production compilation. Those of you who have bought it and listened to it, know that it is much more than that. Very conceptual and very dope, it comes together since most songs stick to the theme. And until everyone realizes that, the night will keep getting darker.
Dujeous? (NYC)
NYC's premier live hip-hop ensemble since 1993. Hey, fact is I've got a lot of history with these kids. From Hunter Elementary School until now. Shit some of there mother's are friends with my mom. So there's a lot of love there. They were a couple years younger than me and I feel like a proud older brother. Just finished the album mastering last night, and the shit is gonna blow your minds. The production is amazing. People have been buzzing straight off of the tracks on the radio player on the site. The lead single is "Sometimes..." and will be available on February 24th. The album "City Limits" is out on March 23rd. Look for a big ass release party, and Dujeous? to get on the road this spring.

ela (Minneapolis)
The first rock band we signed. Won't be the last. I seriously love this fucking record. And I want you to love it as well. They will be on the road as much as possible in 2004. Starting the year off with a opening gig with the buzzed about band The Wrens from New Jersey on January 17th in Chicago. Unfortunately the show is sold out, but you will be able to check it out on
http://www.dcn.com . The lead single/ep on vinyl only "I Don't Know If It's Helping" will be in stores will be out on March 9th, and the full length titled "Stapled To Air" will be available on April 9th. Read what the Pulse Of The Twin Cities said about their December show here -

Faith/ Felice Rosser (NYC)
When I was 15 my friend Samantha hooked me up with a job at HMV on 86th street. As someone who obviously loves music it was like a dream job. I got free and discounted cd's. I rang up Corey Glover from Living Colour one day. I got autographed copies of "Whut? The Album" and "Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde" when they did instores. It was the shit. While I worked there, my co-worker Felice had this band called Faith. And she would hook us up and I would go to the old mercury lounge, or brownies and check them out everytime. They were mind-blowing. The Voice gave them a crazy big article written by Lisa Jones daughter of Leroi Jones (Blues People) aka Amiri Baraka. That same article was included in a chapter of her book "Bulletproof Diva". Spike Lee tried to sign them to his start up label with columbia, but columbia was scared to try and market a band led by a tall black woman, so it fell through. They put an album out independently and then basically split. For the past few years Felice has been playing out as The Felice Rosser trio, and has written new material. Inspiration made me get back in contact and what we've decided to do is release 5 old Faith songs, and 5 new Felice Rosser songs on one album. Imagine Nina Simone, with some dub rhythms, and a wailing psychadelic guitar and you will get an idea of the sound. Little known fact also about Felice is she was in "Permanent Vacation" by Jim Jarmusch. I'm not sure of the release date on this yet, but it's coming soon. For more info on Felice 1) go to barnes and nobles and read "Bulletproof Diva" while drinking a grande latte and 2) check out the website at

Oddjobs (Minneapolis)
After spending the greater part of 2003 drinking alcohol, and touching down from city to city with Zion I, Atmosphere, and others the Oddjobs are taking a much deserved break to work on there new album. But not before doing a set of dates in Colorado in January with the legendary De La Soul.
The Others (Charlotte)
They are from North Carolina, Charlotte to be exact. They sent a demo that was dope as shit. Hip-Hop trio with a soulful sound, booming drums, basically the way rap is supposed to sound. The lead single for "Amazing" is coming out on March 9th, and the album called "Past Futuristic" will be in stores on May 18th.

Roosevelt Franklin (NYC)
After some critical acclaim, the guys are about to hit the road for 5 weeks starting in the middle of January. The second single off of "Something's Gotta Give" is "Insomnia 411" with Slug from Atmosphere and Jean Grae and will be in stores on March 9th. 2004 will also finally see the full album on vinyl, along with the instrumentals on vinyl, both in conjunction with Mr Len's Smacks Records. Videos are also being shot/done for "Muppet Love", "Insomnia 411" and hopefully more. Also look out for the upcoming top-secret surprise ep called "Donkey Punch: Fingerbangs Greatest Hits".
Science Fiction (ATL, LA)
We're finally gonna do some vinyl for "Walls Don't Exist" as well as an import only third single in conjunction with Handcuts Records in Japan. Sci is also readying a side project under his name Wale Oyejide on Shaman Works Recordings called "One day, everything changed" which will come out in May. Sci will put out his next Third Earth record in 2005.

The Sound Defects (Indianapolis)
I found out about these guys at Scribble Jam last year. Someone had given a cd to Black Panther, and while we were driving 13 hours back to New York we listened to it. I liked it, asked if I could keep it for a while, listened again and then got in contact with them. Three dudes, live instruments, samples. They call it what Hip-Hop sounds like when it grows up. It sounds a little like "Check Your Head" withouth the nasal raps. It's our second go round with instrumental albums. It's perfect for Sunday afternoons when you are cleaning up your house. Or when your mom comes by and you wanna play something without curses. It's the first release of the year called "Volume 2" due out February 24th. 15 tracks priced for the recession at $7.99.

As the year goes on there will be more stuff that's in the works.
Jasmine Lee who you should all remember from "Free" off "The Underground Railroad" is gonna do an album with us.
People have been asking us about Invincible. We talked about it. Shook on it, and are now trying to work out the contract. So hopefully it'll work out, if you see her put in a good word for us. There are some other surprises in the works. We hope to keep moving things forward in 2004, thank you all for the support you've shown us so far, and stick with us cause things are gonna continue to get better.
Here's the show dates hope to see you out and about...
