The Clipse are a Virginia based hip-hop duo formed in 1992 by brothers Malice, born Gene Thornton in 1973, and Pusha T, born Terrence Thornton in 1977. They are actually one of the rare first artists to work with the Neptunes. In the early `80s, a young Malice left the Bronx, New York to reach Virginia, followed three years later by Pusha T. There, the duo began to combine their Kool G. Rap, Juice Crew, Eric B & Rakim and Large Professor influences with the unique sounds of Virginia. In 1993, during a cipher, Malice caught the attention of an unknown producer named Pharrell Williams, who promised the brothers to help them to secure a contract with Elektra Records. In 1997, they recorded their debut album, "Exclusive Audio Footage," and released its first single, "The Funeral". While the single garnered interest from fans, it was not promoted properly by Elektra, failed to make a meaningful commercial impact and was deemed a failure. The Clipse were released from their record contract. However, Williams was not discouraged, and continued to hype the group until Star Trak/Arista picked them up in 2001 and released their album "Lord Willin'" on August 20th, 2002. Fueled by the first two singles, "Grindin" and "When the Last Time," the album opened at #1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-hop Album chart and #4 on the Billboard Hot 200, and only a month after its release was certified gold by the RIAA. In late 2003, the Clipse began recording material for their second album, titled "Hell Hath No Fury." Meantime, Arista Records was dissolved into its sister label Jive Records as part of a larger merger between Sony Music Entertainment and BMG. Due to contractual ambiguities, the Clipse were forced to stay on Jive. Increasingly unhappy with Jive, they requested to be released from their contract, but their request was refused. During their legal action against Jive, they only released material fo "We Got It 4 Cheap" mixtape series and decided to establish their own record imprint, known as Re-Up Records, to personally distribute their music. On May 9, 2006, the Clipse finally reached an agreement with Jive Records, and launched a partnership with the label under their Re-Up Records banner.
