Killer Mike Talks About Dungeon Family & New Album
Atlanta's own Killer Mike recently spoke with SOHH exclusively about plans for his indie label Grind Time Official, changes being made to his solo album, and stepping out from the shadow of "the greatest rap group ever."...
In regards to his sophomore album Ghetto Extraordinary, Killer Mike told SOHH, "I have wasted 2 years recording an album y'all will never hear. I'm goin' to do my thing and move."
"My solo album is not in my control," Killer Mike told SOHH exclusively. "I know people have been expecting it for the last 2 years. I went through a lot of bullshit and posturing from the labels I was associated with. A lot of missteps and misjudgment, so I decided to create my own label and work with the folks I want to work with. It ain't no solo shit, I ain't by myself and I ain't sidekicking."
Mike has also donned a new moniker - Mazerati Mike and this July will drop the new album Dat Crack Version 2.2 lb with his crew Grind Time Rap Gang through his label Grind Time Official which will be distributed by Selecto Hits.
"'Umma Shine' is the Grind Time single, that's being sent to radio now. 'Money' is my single. Mazerati Mike is dropping 'Money' first. It's not your typical 'Hey I got money jump around like a monkey shit.' It's everything from ice and bling to pickin' up a dollar off the street on some 'Thank God I can buy a checker burger now," Killer Mike told SOHH.
In lieu of his leadership role at Grind Time Official, Mike has also coined the term MCEO.
"Being a rapper I was getting used, abused and taken advantage of, so I decided to be an MCEO...I signed my own set of producers, if it ain't goin well on the commercial end I will do independent. That's what led to my deal. Most rappers homeboys are garbage but my homies are all thorough. Grind Time Rap Gang is SL Jones, Nickel-Plated Nario, Zack Nickels, Big Smith, Mazerati Mike, Bill Collector, Sharp Shooter, Jackpot and G.G. McGhee. They're all stars, we're coming with pure raw southern rap," Mike told SOHH.
The streets have been abuzz with rumors that Mike might jump ship from his commercial deal with Big Boi's Purple Ribbon label, to join Jermaine Dupri's So So Def roster or Bad Boy. While Mike says he did receive offers from both execs, he plans to remain on Purple Ribbon.
"I was excited to be with Puff. I was going to do a deal with him, but the money he offered was less than what I felt I deserved. Aside from them, JD made a counter offer that was considerably more, but I chose not to take it. Honestly I don't give a fuck about the personality standing next to me. I'm about the money right now and building my fan base," Killer Mike said.
While Killer Mike is still commercially tied to Purple Ribbon, throughout his conversation with SOHH it was clear that his association with Outkast and The Dungeon Family has not been all roses.
"I don't want to be another nameless face in the Dungeon Family," Killer Mike told SOHH exclusively. "I've seen too many come out and get fucked over for whatever reason, like tumbleweeds in the wind. I didn't come up with them, I'm privileged to be associated with them, but I got tired of walking around Atlanta like a sucker. I'm gonna get my due respect too.I'm not saying I'm leaving Purple Ribbon. It's a business arrangement, this isn't about emotional reasoning, this is about business. It takes too much energy to destroy a business relationship."
Still Mike remained grateful to Outkast for the role they've played in his career.
"Antwan Patton and Andre Benjamin saved my life. That's how I view them giving me a record deal, with nothing but love and adoration. I saw Big Boi have to do what he kept doing after Dre said he didn't want to do touring and Aquemini [the label]. He had to reach into himself and be a stronger person. Nobody is leaving. I'm not leaving Purple Ribbon but I realized nobody at Purple Ribbon is going to work harder for me than me. My boss happens to be a member of the largest, biggest rap group ever. Who am I to take him away from what he's doing? Just support me in being an artist. Purple Ribbon is the label and Grind Time is the game. I'm there. I already was the first gold plaque, I have history to make there. I want to be the first platinum plaque for them," Killer Mike told SOHH.
Killer Mike is hoping that platinum plaque will come with his next solo project.
"My solo album is not Ghetto Extraordinary anymore, it's 16 in Tha Kitchen," Killer Mike told SOHH exclusively. "The title comes from a line in "Body Rock" (16 in the kitchen mama taught me how to cook! (HELL YEAH)/ I ain't talkin bout fat backs & collard greens/mama taught me how to cook crack, and sack collard greens). To me, it's too much romanticizing around the crack era and the crack game. I'm just going to tell my story. It will be like an audio auto-biography. My mother has three hours of interview footage that I'm using as commentary throughout the album. She had done an interview already and the reporter sent the interview back to me. So f*ck trying to create skits. It will be real TV, the story of a mother and a boy growing up in the crack era. For real," Killer Mike told SOHH exclusively.
Killer Mike has promised that both his solo and group projects will be pointedly raw, bringing to light issues like police brutality, drug addiction and the abandonment of the black working class by the more upwardly mobile black bourgeoisie. It's evident now more than ever that whether fans continue to call him Killer Mike, Killa Kill or Mazerati Mike, the MC from Atlanta is no longer standing in any shadows - he plans to be heard, loud and clear.
"Nelson Mandela said 'You do the world no good from hiding your light,' I've been dim for too long now," Killer Mike told SOHH. I will shine when I want to shine and grind when I want to grind, anybody that wants to interrupt me, whether corporation or individual, we got a problem."
