KISS FM HARDEST MIX
5minutes, 6meg, 15 tracks. London's Kiss Fm began broadcasting illegally on 94fm in October 1985 and soon Colin Faver played this mix late one evening. It blew me away. Some correspondence to Colin followed and by special request he played it again, this time it was broadcast in stereo. Enjoy that rough yet beautiful transmission here.

UNKNOWN MIX
5minutes, 4meg, about 10 tracks. Broadcast in 1986 on WRKS, New York's 98.7 Kiss Fm. My mate Sandeep Sharma visited New York and returned with some amazing tapes. Here's a short mix by an unknown artist. Nice electro beats with two bar samples and glitches repeated over. Second generation recording, cleaned up using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab.
Tracklist: Tom Tom Club Wordy Rappinghood Sister Sledge Lost in Music Yello I Love You Yellow Magic Orchestra Heaven 17 Skooly D plus others. If you have any info at all about this one please let me know. UPDATE: I got this email yesterday from DJ AD: "The track is not a bootleg, its from around 86/87 and its called "Splashdown on hip hop" by Sanny X & P Reg . Its very hard to track it down these days." ...and he's right, none of the rare record shops have it, but I will get myself a copy somehow. Big big thanks to DJ AD.

BRUCIE B, HOLLYWOOD - SHOUT MIX
Broadcast on the Tim Westwood show, pirate radio station LWR in 1985. Old skool live show recording of DJ Hollywood and Brucie B. Features scratch mix of old mellow break beats and Tears for Fears Shout. Plus Tim Westwood in his early radio style making some genuinely nice comments over it. Download this rare recording. You'll love it.

BIG APPLE PRODUCTION VOL.1
Number 1 in a series of 6 (to the best of my knowledge.) Recorded direct from the B & W labelled 1982 vinyl, this is an excellent 22 year old mastermix. Wow. 22 years old.

BIG APPLE PRODUCTION VOL.3
Genius at Work mix credited to Ser and Duff, 8minutes. A definitive old skool breakbeat mix. 1987 was a good year for sampling, the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu released their klepto-frenzy album entitled 1987 and DJ Duke's Genius at Work volume 3 was to be found in Soho's finer record shops. I bought this yellow labeled hot nugget from Groove Records in Greek Street. J & T records original recording, direct to mp3. This stuff is really fresh.

BIG APPLE PRODUCTION VOL.5
Genius at Work, produced, mixed and arranged by Special S, on the J&T label. Finally tracked this one down at Vinyl Exchange in Manchester. Cost me a tenner and it's well worth it. You get 1991 house mixed with some classic samples. Concise and precise mixing, possibly a slight improvement on volume 4. You may notice a slight wow which is due to an off-centre hole in the record. I'll re-bore it this week and re-encode it again after that, plus Magix Audio Cleaning Lab will get rid of a few clicks. 8 minutes, 8 meg, go for it.

COLIN FAVER PLAYS BIG APPLE VOL.2
One of the most influencial DJs in UK dance music, Colin Faver introduces Big Apple Production volume 2 on his Kiss FM show. Back in the day I went under the tag of Garfield and occasionally sent graffiti artwork to Colin. In retrospect, he must have thought I was some kind of saddo.

TABLET THE SECOND
Now here's a strange one. In the mid 80s London's Capital Radio had a hip hop show DJ'd by Mike Allen. I was never sure how genuine Mike Allen's enthuasiasm for the music was. It seems Capital was responding to the pirates by scheduling two hours of hip hop on a Saturday night, and they chose Mr Allen to front the show. The Capital show was later hosted by Tim Westwood before Radio One gave him a nationwide audience.
Anyhow, here is Tablet the Second. I only ever heard it on Mike Allen's show, even though it got to number one in his Electro chart. And it is a strange one. Think cut and splice, beat-imperfect politically unsure chop-up. It's starts a bit dodgy, gets laughable, then settles down with some armageddon-esque samples and almost gets good near the end. 6 meg. Try it.

BREAKBEAT MEDLEY
10minutes, 8meg, quick edits, many tracks. Released by Hot Tracks disco mix service, this lovely mix is a hip hop electro club fusion, no date available but sounds like a late 80s production. More well-mannered than Big Apple vol 3, but still a good mix. Excellent quality recording, more info to follow.

KISS FM ADVERT
Got £6.50? Good, then you can buy yourself a 19 year old T-shirt. I did, and wore it til it fell apart. Wore it on my first day back at Lowlands College after the summer holiday, and I looked wicked fresh. I've still got the free Kiss Fm car sticker, but many years in the back of the Capri have rendered it all manky. Click on it for a closer look. By the way, don't send any money to 29 Dysons Road, it's probably a nail painting shop now

LESSON 1 - DOUBLE DEE AND STEINSKI
In 1983 Tommy Boy Records ran a competition to remix Play that Beat Mr DJ by G.L.O.B.E and Whiz Kid. The prize was $100, the Tommy Boy back catalogue, a Tommy Boy shirt and radio airplay. This is the winner.

TIM WESTWOOD DUB PLATE PRESSURE
It's 1986, race home from school, set the tuner to 92.5 LWR and pop in a cassette for some serious pause button pushin - it's the Tim Westwood hip hop show. We spread the word, told our friends and kept it locked. Get this 5 minute segment now.

DMC 1985 CHAMPIONSHIP MIX
Recorded direct from vinyl. This is prolific DJ Roger Johnson's 1985 Disco Mix Club championship mix.The standards had already been set higher by the time this one was made, and the scratching is well lame. Still, I've included it here as it does contain some nice tunes, especially an extended segment of Sucker DJ by Dimples Dee. Here's the full tracklist:

DJ UNDERCOVER - ONE TIME MIX
Tim Westwood broadcast this on his LWR hip hop show in early 1985. It's a live scratch mix taking Hip Hop Beat by UK group Rapologists as it's main break. DJ Undercover gives shout outs at the start, as Westwood drops the fader on "the whack mother f*ckers who stole my records from the Wag". Undercover adds nice warmth during the mix by flicking the mic on a few more times to add some more shouts, and Westwood can't help but giggle at the end when 'You're Wondering Now' gets scratched in. With it's casual attitude and innovative sampling, this mix will make you smile

FROGGY'S GO GO MIX
Three minutes of pure Washington DC Go Go, really love this sound. Good quality recording from around 1986, taped from Capital Radio I think, may have even been on the Pat and Mick show. Blimey. I'm 75% sure that DJ Froggy / Simon Harris did it so if you can confirm or deny it tell me. Tracklist: Little Benny and the Masters Who Comes to Boogie Trouble Funk Drop the Bomb We Need Money Kurtis Blow Party Time
Update! - Legendary DJ, producer and recording artist Simon Harris emailed this: "Hi Rich, Yes the Go Go Mix was one of mine -thanks! I now have your mp3 for my archive of my old mixes. Cheers, Simon" . Remember those black and red Music of Life 12" sleeves? That's Simon's label.

DISCO45 JAM ON IT MIX
Saw an ad for this 12" white label in the back of Blues and Soul magazine, circa 1985. Low quality bootleg pressing, so it required a good deal of cleaning up in Magix Audio Cleaning Lab. On the record are three unknown, unnamed, anonymous mastermixes. Here's the first one, hereby known as Jam On It mix as it takes the Newcleus electro track as it's foundation break. Tracklist to follow. 11meg, 12 minutes. Yes, I used to study that cover for hours.

BATTLE OF THE DJ 1986
Live and direct from the A1 King Discoteque, this is the 1986 battle for world DJ supremacy at the New Music Seminar in New York. Featuring Jazzy Jeff, Chad Jackson and Barry B from the Get Fresh Crew, this tape was played by who else but Westwood on LWR. Old Skool DJ turntablism at it's most raw. I don't want to spoil it for you, but Chad Jackson didn't win. Went back to Manchester, head in hands, tail between legs... HO!!!

LATIN RASCALS - PACO SUPERMIX2
Albert Cabrera and Tony Moran are the Latin Rascals. In the early 1980s they created a unique and often emulated mastermix sound. Their mixes are some of the most sought after on the internet, and this could be why you Googled into my site today :-) Here's a Dynamic Duo 17 minute mix first broadcast on their WKTU in New York mastermix show, circa 1985. Tracks include Cameo She's Strange One for the Treble Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight Breakdancers Art of Noise Beat Box.

RAP-A-GRANNY MIX
6 and a half minutes. Mixed by Bizzie Bee Butler. Direct from the DMC November 86 album, Rap-a-granny was more than a standard DMC mix. A bit more creativity went into this, namely in the form of a granny. A rapping granny. Called Dotty B. Ok, so you may dismiss this a gimicky, but hey, it was 1986 and people were just starting to think sampling cartoons would be a neat idea. This should be listened to and regarded as a history lesson.

JAZZY JEFF & FRESH PRINCE - LIVE AT UNION SQ. (FULL)
If you've got the album 'He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper' then you'll have this. At least you think you do. But you don't. Because here is the full recording, all 21 minutes of it. I taped it from LWR Tim Westwood back in the day, but you try trawling through 500 cassettes to find it. Your play and fast forward buttons will wear out.
